2012 Knight Brake Backing plates

Before leaving N.S. earlier this week I greased the chassis on our 2012 Knight and while doing so I noticed that the axles did not have any backing plates on the inside of the brake drums leaving the brake shoes visible and exposed . Is this a standard thing on the Roadmaster chassis with air brakes or did they just forget to install the backing plates on our unit ? I have owned several trucks with air brakes in the past and they have all had had backing plates to keep road dirt and the like from getting onto the brake shoes and assemblies and I find it odd that our motorhome does not have these. Next time you get a chance check on your Roadmaster chassis and see if you have backing plates....Alan

I don't have any on mine as I can see the shoes clearly. I don't think this has anything to do with the Roadmaster Chassis though. The brakes should be part of the entire axle assembly which will be made by someone else. I think my rears axles are Dana, and my front axle is Meritor.

I'm assuming a lot of other manufactures are the same.

None on mine. Didn't have any on my last MH either and it was on a Freightliner chassis. From what I have experanced, no backing plates is normal.

I guess by the replies that backing plates are not included on RV's or some of them at least. I don't know the reason for this as I think they definitely serve a purpose. Thank 's for your replies on this issue....Alan
