Hi All: hope all had triffic Holidays! I picked up my 1991 Monaco Signature just before Christmas, and just parked it when I got home due to other things going on.
So, today I was moving Vehciles around and decided to check the engine in my Signature. It turned out to be a Cummins L-10, not the 8.3 L I thought it came with.
Does anyone else have this combonation in this year of coach? I was already to bump the horsepower up via the P-7100 pump, but this has the old PT style injection pump on it, so I am lost on this one.
Any help would be more than welcome on this one. This does have the "Jake Brake" which the 8.3 L only has the exhaust brake {which is good}

That is definetly a better deal getting the L-10 Cummins option. Do you have a 4 speed or a 6 speed Allison transmission with it? From what I understand is that the L-10 has no EGR system so better MPG. Either way that is a real strong motor. The Jake Brake is a great option also.

Cummins had produced and sold the L-10 from 1982 to early 1998. The old L10 series displaced 10.0 litres (610.2 cu in),

Three versions offered (I think yours is the middle one which is 330 hp)
1,050 pound force-feet (1,424 N·m) @ 1,300 rpm, 310 horsepower (231 kW; 314 PS) (231 kW) electronically governed at 2,100 rpm
1,150 pound force-feet (1,559 N·m) @ 1,300 rpm, 330 horsepower (246 kW; 335 PS) (246 kW) electronically governed at 2,100 rpm
1,200 pound force-feet (1,627 N·m) @ 1,300 rpm, 400 horsepower (298 kW; 406 PS) (298 kW) electronically governed at 2,200 rpm

Hi Mike: Thanks for the info: Yes, I am lucky enough to have the 6 speed Allison & a 2 speed axle. And my engine is all mechanical. It has the old style inter cooler in the manifold, rather than the radiator style of today.
So now I have to figure out how to twist the power up some, as there was a couple of hills I bogged down on in Tenn. But also, that was the first experience with the m/h. I had a 5th wheel, and pulled it with my Dodge 3500 which is pumped up some and it pulled my 38 foot fairly easy. Also, I did not descover how to down shift the trans until I got home in the drive. In fact, I couldn't get the heater to work other than the dash heater, so the lay over was a little cold.
I do believe I am going to like the M/H better than the 5er though.
Thanks again, Ron

Ron I noticed you live in the town of our favorite Flee Market and probably one of the oldest and we think the best in the south. Good luck with the coach, I have heard only good things about the L-10 engine.

Hi Walt: Yes Canton is real proud of the mighty 200 acre swap meet. I go once in awhile. It would also be a good place to have a convention since there is all the hookup on sight as well as the cabana's for various sellers to show their wares.
Last year, "Good Sam" had a convention there. All loved it!
Stop by and give me a shout any time Walt. Hope you had a great holiday.

Ron, they will all bog down unless you keep the RPMs up. Even my 525 hp/1650 ft lb motor. My max rpm is about the same as yours. For small grades I keep it above 1500 rpm and if it is a 6%+ grade then 1800 rpm and then I select a gear that will put me at the speed I want while maintaining the 1800 rpm and I can climb anything. For me that is 4th gear at 1800 rpm at 48 mph at 6% or greater. Don't think you need more power you probably just need to know how to use what you. I select and hold my 4th gear so it will not shift to 5th and lose rpms. The big thing to watch all the time is the water temp. If I don't downshift on a steep grade that water temp will rise fast. I get a friendly reminder light and horn at 210* (my wife gets that more than me) and then downshift and it cools right down fast.

Mike: This was my first time using the 6 speed auto Trans. and was surely not used to a little toggle switch as the shifter!!! It wasn't until I got home, and in the driveway found out how to lock it in a gear range. Like I said all new to me. Was hoping to find the original manual in the coach. What I did find was on all the acessories, but nothing from the Monaco People. I am trying to get this ready for the inspection I have to go through here. I have several lights that need replacing and I am about finished there. Still need to adjust brakes.

Are they air brakes? If so they are adjusted by chocking the tires taking the parking brake off and pushing the brake pedal hard to the floor six times. This should automatically adjust them. Hopefully you don't have the old type manual adjusters

Mike: I would rather have the old type manual adjusters. As a old skinner, I have seen cracked drums, roled over cams, cam bushing worn out. With the auto's, that is never caught until it is too late!! I used to be able to inspect and adjust my rig {set of doubles} within 15 miinutes. Adjusting the trailers first then seting the brakes on the trailers and adjust the tractor if needed. But I am going to try your reply even though I will crawl under to see the type I have. I just need to go to town as their parking lot is smooth. My drive is wore out and rough, not level.

Mike: I hear that Detroit 60 series gets great mileage, and at 500 Hp, I wouldn't think you would even know there was a hill.

I can baby the Detroit and get 7 mpg at 62 mph but it has to be flat with no wind. The killer is I weigh 46,000 lbs. My normal 1000+ mile average on all terrain is around 6.4 mpg. I hope that at 60k miles when Detroit says I need to get the valves and injectors adjusted that it improves a little.

My auto slack adjusters work great but I have disc brakes on the steer and drive axles and drums on the tag axle and I keep them adjusted on a regular basis and do a visual check.

I guess I will have to stop by that flea market. My in laws live in Dallas so I drive from Atlanat to Dallas all the time. My father-in-law was born and raised in Mineola and my wife's main family settled in Jacksonville in the 1800's. Lot of her family (Tilley) in cemeteries around there. Got a Navy buddy who grew up in Wills Point.

If you are ever in the area, Give me a hollar. I would love to meet with you. I am still learning about my M/H, but wish the build manual was still in there. All the books for acessories such as the satellite, heater & frigerator & others are still in a binder.
I see your thumb a drag car. Do you race? A friend of mine has a Eagle bus, with a 8V92 Detroit, and claims he gets 10 mpg with it. I would have thought your 60 series would have gotten better mileage.
I have no idea how big my fuel tank is, but in Arkansa, I was just under the half tank mark, I put in 100 gallons, so I must have a 200 gallon tank. I'm not sure how big my generater is either yet. Right now, my goal is to get it past the inspection, then I will try to find out how more things work on it. I would like to sell out here and head back out west, like Nevada or Arizona, maybe Idaho. So that is the reason I bought the coach in preperation of maybe having a a auctioneer come in and unload all at once, as I have too much "Stuff" for garage sales. At my age, I no longer need a lot. I just need to sort through my tools and see what I am going to keep. Sell my other welders , but may keep my little Mig welder. It could be handy in emergency.
My Buddy {retired submariner} wants me to come to Idaho way, so I plan to swing by there.

I race but don't drive. I specialize in alcohol fueled supercharged motors of 2500 to 3200 hp range depending on the type supercharger used. I used to build the motors and tune them but now I just tune them. I have several cars all over the world I tune.

If I remember correctly that Series 92 Detroit 8V92 was a 2 cycle V8 diesel. Also came in a V6 version (6V92). Very different engine. That motor was used by Grayhound buses in all their buses back in the 80's and early 90's.

I should be driving back to Texas in the springtime.
