My Interstate 4D Deep Cycle house batteries need to be replaced. I thought I'd go to 6 volts from Costco. Doing the measurements the (4) 6 volts won't quite fit. I wouldn't mind replacing with 4D deep cycles but I have only found Interstates and they want to charge me full suggested retail ($217 ea.). Maybe Sam's Club GCs might have different dimensions, any ideas. My battery box dimensions are 20.125 W-17D-9.75H.

Thanks for the help.

Don, I have 4 - 6V Trojan T105 batteries in house battery box. Attached is a picture of how to arrange them. This is not a picture of mine...this is a picture I found on the net that I used to figure out how to do it. The only thing I had to do was to put the two front batteries on a 2x6 to lift them up. I can't remember if that was because of the locking mechanism at the front or because of the lip on the battery.

The previous posted picture is correct. One more thing,,,you must trim off the lip of the tray at the rear. You will need that extra 1/2". The cable arrangement is the hardest part! Car Quest has the correct lug ends for the cables. Then go to a welding shop and have them attach ends to their heavy welding cable.I believe mine was 2/0. They have the proper crimping tool for the lugs. And not expensive!

Now I remember why I put the two front batteries on a 2x6...it lifted them above the backside of the drawer lock. That enabled me to move them all the way forward, that way I did not to have to cut the back lip off.

Pictures of my battery box...

Jimmy, thanks for the help. Your idea about the 2X4 under the front batteries almost worked. The battery cut off switch would not allow me to push the tray back in with the board in place. Without the board in place the baggage door lock had me on the ropes. Did you have a battery cut off switch in the way also?

I don't have a battery cut off in the way....where is yours mounted ?

Sounds like you may have to cut the lip off the back like RickGyver suggested.

You are right that the 6 volters won't fit that stock tray. It is 1 in to short on the width and not low enough to give clearance for the cabling.
I have a 96 that had the same problem.
But- I widened and lowered that lower tray to make the 6 volters fit.
It is a lot of work but can be done. I really don't think the 4D's are as deep cycle as the 6 volters are.
Those 4 D's never worked very long for me that is why I went thru the trouble to fit the 6 volters.

Neither of the photos have any battery hold downs! On a Spokane street or other rough road you could be playing with fire!
