98 Windsor coolant filter

On my 1998 Windsor with 8.3 Cummins. The coolant filter that is on it is # 4074 Napa. When I look up the part number for it, it's WF2071. The 4074 is a lot larger than the WF2071. Which one should I use? Thanks.

First thing is you need to test the coolant and see if you need a blank or a DCA 4 unit filter. The larger filter is just a extended drain filter and I don't use them because I am afraid that the media could break down.
The blank filter is Fleetguard WF 2122,NAPA 4083, Wix 24083
DCA 4 unit filter is Fleetguard WF 2071, NAPA 4071, Wix 24071 and notice that Wix makes filters for NAPA. All of these filter numbers are the smaller filter, also be very careful when you attemp to close the plastic valve on the filter housing and if it is hard to move just change the filter as fast as you can as this valve is prone to twist off and the metal valves are hard to find and both kinds are expensive.

As Walt stated the smaller filter is one to use. That's what is used on my 2002 ISC-350.

In regards to the Coolant Shut-Off Valve, the safest way to turn it off is to do it when you change the oil and oil filter.

With the oil filter removed and using a long handled needle nose pliers or some other device, grab the end of the valve facing the oil filter housing and gently work it back and forth gingerly until it is free enough to turn it 90 degrees to off.

If you attempt to turn the other end with it seized trust me it WILL break.

With the older engine that you have they just may have a SS version of the Coolant Shut-Off Valve to replace the plastic valve. You would have to ask the Cummins Dealer plus have your engine serial number when you go.

See these TWO threads regarding the Coolant Shut-Off Valve for additional information.
