99 Diplomat need to change filler neck on propane

One of my tanks has a filler connection where the threads are slightly damaged. This makes it difficult and dangerous to fill. I have the replacement neck/connection I just want to clarify my approach to repair. The tank is almost empty. Could I just run the generator until it quits/runs out of propane then bleed the little valve until it stops releasing gas? That is if there is any gas remaining and then replace the neck. Of course all battery and appliances, hot water tanks, would be turned off.

gww, It your LP dealer (commercial type) not able of replacing your LP valve? I'd take a look in the Yellow Pages.

They can recover the gas and install the valve and fill the tank and you're outta there!
