My 1999 Monoco Windsor engine dies when ABS light comes on after hitting brakes somewhat aggressively. Stranded us at brake light in Fla. After pumping brakes and decreasing PSI to under 90 engine will crank drive few miles and die again. Have to continually repeat pumping brakes to start engine when it dies. Please HELP!

Something in the ABS controller has gone wrong and is taking out something electrical. Unplugging the ABS unit will temporarily get you going until you can have it repaired, and it should be repaired ASAP.

I'd call a mobile repair tech, they'll know what to unplug to get you rolling.

Be very careful! While your brakes should work normally your ABS system will not work at all! I can't stress the importance of you understanding this.

ABS brakes are great, BUT, if you drive a little P/U pulling a too big trailer you need it more than your coach does. It does not affect your ability to stop, it simply does not allow your brakes to lock up. I have over 40k on my M/H and the ABS actuated once. On my previous M/H with over 100k and NO ABS I still was able to stop each and every time. Don't tailgate or slam on your breaks and the ABS is not needed.

I'm just wondering how you KNOW when ABS "actuates"? On our coach one would have to be clairvoyant to KNOW.

Honest answer; you can drive it as long as you want to, it'll be perfectly safe. The problem is that one time something really gets in your way and you need it. You don't want to hit something (Your fault or not.) and have someone find out your ABS system is disabled.

As for what, chances are either a sensor went bad or something in the system has gone awry. Given you have to keep the air pumped down I'd suspect the pressure sensor, at least that's where I'd start.

Go out and in a safe area where you can legally do such purposely engage your ABS system. Hang on tight and lock em down. If ABS actually engages you'll know it.

Here is something to think about. Is the engine dying because of a sensor on the air system says your compressor system is malfunctioning and shutting down the engine intentionally to safe the system? This could be why it only starts after the pressure has been reduced.

Another possibility is that a one way check valve has failed between the air tanks and the air compressor so it is allowing too much reverse pressure on the air compressor head so the engine can't turn the compressor over so it dies.

Remember that if you lose air pressure going down the road then when the tanks get to 50-60 psi all your brakes are going to lock up tight as a drum.

The ABS light may be a secondary indiaction of a another problem.
