Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use the R-134a refrigerant you can buy at a car parts store to service my dash air?

More than likely that is what is in it now. It will be labled somewhere on the system. Usually around the evaporator core.

My suggestion from the question you asked, is that you pay a professional to check the unit. If you are low on refrigerant, there has to be a leak and it should be repaired. By not knowing what you are doing, can wind up costing a bunch of $$$ and possible injury to yourself.

2008 Model must be R134A by law. The service fittings are exclusive to that refrigerant. You can get a charging adaptor with guage at Wally World or an auto parts store for about $25. Use ONLY "Pure" 134A without sealer. The sealers often don't work, and can clog up the system causing a big bucks repair.

DIY recharging is effective ONLY if you still have at least 10 PSI of system pressure. If the pressure is down to zero, there has probably been infiltration of moisture which requires an evacuation with a vacuum pump.
