I have owned 40' 5th Wheel travel trailers for more than 35 years but looking to purchase a Motorhome. I have found a Monaco Knight 38PBD with 45000 miles. The basics: interior condition, exterior condition, generator, tires and batteries are acceptable, the previous owner took excellent care of the coach. The engine is a 315 hp Cummings. Being new to motorhomes, any insight into what I should check, or issues with that model that would assist me in making the correct purchase decision would be appreciated. I believe that there are no stupid questions, I just need to know which ones to ask. Thank you in advance.

  • Check the age on the tires, not just the appearance.
  • I put Koni FSD shocks on, rides much nicer now.
  • The 2001's has an un-repairable aluminum radiator, check closely for leaks where the tubes meet the tank - $3500+ to replace.
  • The 2001 had a recall to install an external transmission oil cooler, and bypass the cooler in the radiator. Coolant in the transmission oil will kill the allison. Look for the external cooler.
  • Check for trailing arm issue.
  • Make sure it's an ISC, not an ISB (IMO)
  • Norcold recall
I love my 2001, but I can do most all of my own work. There is lots of help here and at the monacoers yahoo group. Monacoers has a great parts database too.

Also, use the search tool here for "2002 Knight" and see what comes up.

Thank you, I have found this a very informative site and spent most of last night reading the various post. When in doubt I ask the experts and I have found that owners of the product that I am interested in are the best to ask advice. I have started my list, with your reply, to take to the dealer for answers.
