Air Cleaner Leak

I have been looking for a Monaco/Holliday rambler imperial plq42' .I was going to look at one and the owner said it was in the shop getting a in frame overhaul at 41,000 miles. told me that the air filter canister had a rust hole in it and allowed dirty air into the engine resulting to the point of needing overhauled.
Has anyone heard of this happening??
Thanks in advance for any input. I really like these coaches, but I would like to know if this is something you need to be watching for.

The air intake to the filter is pulling air from outside the coach and there is a lot of gunk in the air relative to the inside of the engine compartment. A hole in the cannister unless it was huge should not affect the quality of the air, it would still be filtered, unless the hole is past the filter and before the intake manifold. I guess anything is possible, but I'd be leary.

Do a search here on "engine dusting". Lots of good information from Gary on this thread. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f123/dete...es-115270.html
