Alternator/Charge light on

We have a 2006 Monaco Knight PDQ and had the alternator lock up and throw a belt. After we had the alternator replaced the alternator is working, showing 13+ volts on the gauge. The alternator light will not go out, any ideas?

Thanks

Steve and Joey Lewis

Guess they left off or crossed some wires on installing it.

What was their explanation ?

Their explanation was that it must have been a preexisting problem or there was damage done when the alternator failed. After getting frustrated with the original mechanic I took it to a battery/alternator shop. They showed me there are only three wires coming off the alternator, the positive, the negative and an R terminal which has a 12 volt output. There is also a terminal with a 6 volt output, they suggested that the 12 volt terminal would be the correct terminal. But the light stays on. It is like there is a fuse in that circuit or a broken wire. I am hoping I can find someone with experience in this issue or someone who has a wiring diagram.

Google your alternator and put lamp terminal in the search.

I did a general search and it showed one. Could there be another wire hanging somewhere ?

There is another wire that looks like it has been disconnected for quite a while. We checked it and found 12 volts any time the ignition is on. The alternator mechanic said it was for an alternator that required a signal from the ignition to turn on. The alternator we have does not require that signal. Is it possible that the light is triggered by the computer and for some reason it is not seeing the alternator is charging?

What model Alternator was installed? Was it the same as what was removed?

Here is the wiring for a Delco Remey alternator.

Of course no two coaches are the same, but this is how Monaco built mine in May 2007.

They used a 5 volt relay, which explains your mechanic's quandary of the wire not being on a 12v terminal. Look for a metal relay, usually in the front run panel. The label is mine.

The schematic is for my coach. Monaco had none, so I drew my own.

The 5v relay is normally closed, grounding the ALT light. The light has 12v to it and the relay grounds the other wire to turn on light. Once the engine starts and alternator is charging, 5v from the alternator is applied to 5v relay. This opens the contacts so no ground is supplied to ALT light, and therefore no illumination.

The wire lettering is specific to my year/model coach, so I donít know if yours has same markings on your wires.

Locating the relay and testing there would be a good starting point.

I found the alternator fail relay and the alternator relay wire at the alternator. There was s 5 amp fuse that was blown. Once the fuse was replaced I checked the voltage at the relay and had 7 volts with the relay unplugged. Once I connected the relay the fuse blew again. The coil on the relay is shorted, time to find a new 6 volt relay, anybody know where I can find one?
Thanks

Thanks for all the help. I was able to get a 6 VDC relay and get it installed. The Alt/Charge light is finally working correctly. All the comments I received were very helpful, I am not sure how I would have found the problem without the help.

Great.
And we're a lot cheaper than your mechanic
