Another Samsung Post
OK Guys. I am ready to make something happen on an upgrade to a Samsung residential Refrigerator. Our last trip was with 50 - 60 degree temps inside the NO_COLD except when hooked up to shore power, then it would get down to 40 or so degrees. The RF197 has been discontinued but there is another number that supersedes it. As much as I would like to do the work myself, I need to find a reputable, affordable, shop within reasonable distance to Rock Hill SC. to do the work. Rock Hill SC is about 30 miles South of Charlotte NC. Has anyone had this upgrade and was really happy with the workmanship, and final cost, enough to recommend a particular shop that is experienced with this modification? I would drive to Florida or Indianna if it would make a justifiable difference. Money is a factor but I don't dare tackle a job like this by myself.

This is not a direct answer but just a comment. Not familiar with your exact unit. The difficulty and cost is directly related to whether you have dead space below your no cold or if you have a furnace below it. If it is the former, it is much cheaper.
In our 2007 Endeavor, we have dead space below our frig. Next spring when we come back from AZ I'm going residential, doing the work myself.

BVThunder: Thanks for the reply. My unit has a rather large pull out drawer under the NO COLD. Wife concerned about loosing some space to store cooking pots and pans. I know that there are several out there that have made the switch and I would like to hear from some of them. I talked to a Samsung tech person on the phone about the compatibility of the residential unit in a R/V but he was not very helpful or very familiar with R/V's. On this forum, I have read of many happy campers with the Samsung swap. I really would like to see a completed and professionally upgraded unit in person. Shure would be nice to hear of an all electric R/V refrigerator designed to replace the NO COLD.

The below link is from 2012 it describes the new technology Digital Inverter Compressors Samsung is using in their Refrigerators. Before buying a Samsung with the new technology for an RV that will be run on an inverter I would do some research to make sure it is compatible with a PSW of MSW Inverter. Don't get me wrong, I think Samsung Refrigerators are the best on the market. We have one in the S & B we bought last year, not with the Digital Inverter Compressor. Was at the Pomona RV show last week and noticed every RV with residential refrigerators had Whirlpools in them. Did not see any Samsung's, do the manufacturer know something we don't. Or are they getting a better price break from Whirlpool.

chboone points out a very critical point for RVers. One of the selling points for the Samsung unit (RF197 in particular) was that Samsung had stated that they were MSW inverter compatible. That is huge for folks who want to dry camp and/or run their refer while traveling. And, while a lot of inductive load products can handle MSW, it was refreshing to have Samsung give the OK.
With the "Inverter Compressor" you essentially have a linear motor pushing/pulling a single piston back and forth in a single cylinder. Designed to work on household current they had to add an inverter circuitry to make the liner motor act like a modulated voice coil to increase the oscillation travel for greater demand and decrease it for low demand. How this integrates with a MSW inverter is yet to be discussed. So, for the time being I would be a bit cautious of the Samsung RF197ACRS replacement which is the Samsung RF18HFENBSR (this is the one with the linear motor). Everything might just be OK. But, this is a serious change that needs some research for the RVing community.

Thanks (chboone) and (Bob&AnnaMari) as well as (BVThunder) for your reply's I called Samsung to find out if the replacement was compatible to R/V usage and would it run continuously on MSW current. The person I talked to was not knowledgeable with R/V's or inverters. He said he was a trouble shooter and did not suggest contacting someone else with Samsung that could answer my questions. All I got from him is that if the ref was well secured and had 110V power, it should work OK. All of the technical stuff about the compressors and inverters are over my head. I am assuming that my coach would be equipped with a MSW inverter. As you can see, I need some direction and would be very appreciative for help or suggestions from people that have done this.

Alliance Coach in Wildwood Florida does so many conversions to the Samsung that they keep them in stock. You might give them a call and see if they still have the RF197 in stock and make a deposit to hold one for you on the condition that they will do the install. They also have a cabinet shop and can take care of any woodwork that needs to be done.
You seem insecure of the swap to a residential. Perhaps you should consider and Amish cooling unit upgrade on your Norcold. My guess is that it would cost about the same as a conversion to residential. Might be a little cheaper since you are not doing the work.

PapaJ,

I ditched the Not-So-Cold last year what a difference but we also switched out the inverter for the Magnum 2812 and new controller. This is not my coach but the install is the same. My inverter is on all the time the only thing is I turn off the ice maker going down the road because of the power draw.

We have the Samsung RF217ACPN in our 5er and love it...
I will never have another rv fridge
Al I can tell you is that ours is plugged into a 110 circuit and the res pkg includes 3 batteries instead of the normal two and a Progressive Dynamics Converter PDF4590K18L.
good luck - and get excited about not having to throw hot food out !

From what I can see of the spec's yours does not have the digital inverter compressor. There should be no problem running it a MSW or PSW inverter. The digital inverter compressor has a 10 year warranty. On a standard refrigerator the compressor cycles on and off based on the temperature required. The increased life of the digital compressor is because it is always running, the speed is varied by the inverter as required base on the refrigerator temperature. There is no high starting current to break down the motor windings.

Problems with Samsung 197
We are thinking about making the switch from the Norcold to Samsung. We went online and read the comments on the Samsung 197. They were almost all negative. It seems that the frig leaks water into the bottom bin from condensation. Maybe this is why the 197 has been discontinued. Also the handles on the Samsung protrude more than the Norcold. If your frig is on a slide this may not be a problem, but ours is not on a slide so I'm not liking this. Not sure what we are going to do, the Norcold is working, but it get warmer and then colder.

Jim,
You are correct. There have been issues with the Samsung RF197 freezing up at the drain tube junction and releasing condensate into the crisper drawers. And there have been some other issues.
There is a well known retrofit drain clip replacement that seems to remedy the issue with freezing around the drain area. Unfortunately, I think the problem occurs after the warranty has expired and the owner is left to pick up the tab for the repair. Most of us replace the bad tab with a new one when we buy the refer. I did anyway.
The big change, as mentioned above is the compressor. I think this had more to do with the model change than the ice issue.
