automatic changeover from shore to generator?

Is there such a thing as an automatic changeover from shore power to start the generator?
Last Saturday night, there was a big storm that knocked out a transformer at the CG. So, we had no electric, but we were gone until the next afternoon and didn't know it.
I started the generator when we got home. But, the refrigerator had been off for about 18 hours.
So, the real question is, Is there something that would automatically start the generator to power the fridge if the shore power went out? Or, is there something that would automatically switch over to LP for the fridge?
(We do not have an inverter, if that means anything.)

What type of refrigerator do you have?

Most rv refigerators will switch over to LP when power is lost. Set it on automatic and it will switch. If it is a home style refrigerator it will not burn LP.

It would help to know what generator you have. Cummins has a device for auto-starting a generator (EC30W) in the event your batteries get too low or your cabin temp is either too high or too low. I installed one on my unit a couple of years ago and it works very well and it is a snap to install.

Go here.

If your Holiday Rambler has the intelitec ems that monaco used in many of their coaches, it has an optional auto gen start module that works as described above, but with a much easier installation, as it is an addon to existing equipment.

It's on my list, probably for this coming off season.

You need to tell us the year and model of your coach. Our coach came from the factory with the AGS below installed.
Products: Automatic Generator Start Controllers

You may have one and just don't know it.

His "public profile" says it's a 2004 Monaco Monarch Neptune. That coach has a 5.5KW generator with no option for larger. Also it's 30 amp standard with 50 amp option. Frig. options start at small 2 door and go to large(er) 4 door. Inverter is NOT an option!

Our coach does have the intellic EMS and a 5.5 Onan generator. The Dometic fridge can run on either LP or 120v, but I sure don't no of any automatic changeover on it.

Oh, by the way, now that the power has been restored, everything works great, except that the EMS now doesn't display the amp draw, which it did before. Any idea why?
