Did something foolish today: I left a basement door open and drove it into a post....destroying it beyond repair. I'm on the road, so plywood will have to cover the hole for several weeks until I get back home. Fortunately, the damage seems to have been only to the door: the hinge/track looks OK; the other doors not damaged.

Wondering what kind of money am I looking at to repair this? The door is road side, the first door of the full pass-thru bay on my '04 DIP 40' RV. Do manufacturers make extra doors and warehouse them?...or is replacement strictly that of 3rd party (like many classic Chevrolet parts are these days)?...or must it be custom made? Any RV junk-yards out there? Then getting the door painted to match the rest of the coach? Typical cost? Man, I feel stupid.

First call Monaco and see what other models and years use the same door and price a replacement from them. Then check the following company:

Visone Auto Mart
243 N FIELDS RD
EAST BERNSTADT, KY 40729
606-843-9889

They have a lot of damaged coaches and hopefully will have what you need.

I did the same thing last summer. Cost about 2K to have my door repaired. I have a National, so no new door from them. Their supplier is still in business so I could of had a new one made, but the cost was about the same. New door was about $700 plus the cost of painting it.

We had a bent door repaired and painted and the cost was just over $2000. The door frame was straightened and the door skin replaced. The outer skin is glued to the frame.

I left the generator door open once, caught it in rear view mirror. We now do a walk around before we pull out of anywere.I also installed 2" fish eyes on the coach lower mirror to see the steps.

I had a similar problem and got it repaired by a local body shop. I managed to save the inner lining and the latch mechanism. I baught a new hinge from Monaco and the shop fabricated the outer aluminum with just 2 bends and the frame. The frame and outer surface cost $450. Reassembly and painting was about $400. It turned out great.

Have a friend that had a similar issue, was around 2K to get it repaired by another friend that worked him a deal.

Good luck,

Here's another place that has a good reputation. So far I've been lucky and haven't had to use them.

McKinney RV-Alabama RV Dealer, Red Bay AL, RV Service

I bought one last year from rv salvage in Indiana (online) about 180 dollars
painted it my self, can't even tell it happened (I used a 2 part polyurethane in an air type spray gun to refinish it) My coach is not metallic paint so the color match was easy.

I was quoted $2K from the dealer. (I was just checking, in case)

The final step in departing is that DW does a lights check. She starts at the front passenger or driver's side and as she is walking to the back of the TOAD she pull on every door handle along the way. With me throwing the switches and pushing on the break pedal she checks the lights, then she walks up the (or down depending on your orientation) other side pulling on all the door handles and to the front of the coach where again she checks the lights. When she climbs inside she locks the handle latch, and we are ready to be on our way.

Just a thought.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. On our Georgetown, we have a problem with the forward-most cargo bay on the driver's side.

The door sticks out about a half inch at the top on the forward edge. There's an aluminum angle that forms the top of the door support structure and it appears to have been driven outwards.

It's not obvious how the structure is arranged. If anyone has drawings of that forward cargo bay door support structure, I'd sure like a copy.

Thanks to all responses! I think I'll be repairing this w/o informing the insurance company.

Back in the DC area (on CraigsList) was a HR coach that burned internally and a salvage yard is parting it out. I'm also encouraged that rebuilding this myself (but with a professional paint job) is within my skill set. I'll post my costs. But I won't do this until we get back home in mid April.

In the mean time, I cut plywood to fit the opening, screwing this to the RV frame to keep the weather out of the basement. Then I disassembled the damaged door and flattened the panel as best I could. It is now re-attached (to the plywood). Love those drywall screws.

I too do a walk-around & light check before getting underway. But this time I was washing the RV in a high-bay quarter-car-wash in Albuquerque....and it was a brief lack of concentration on my part that I'm now regretting.
