I need to replace the Relay on my HR Neptune 2005. If I shut the two battery disconnect switches in the battery compartment, will this kill all power to the relay? The relay is in the Bin under the driver side, where the fuse box is. Part Number LR9806.

My concern is simple, getting a Jolt!!! Do I need to disconnect the batteries also before the replacement?

Thanks
Matthew

When in doubt, DISCONNECT.

There is no harm done then.

Depends on which relay you are referring to. I would take the grounds off the batteries to be safe.

My LR9806 apparently failed a few days ago. When I jumpered around it the power was restored to the coach even though the main disconnect in the battery compartment was in the off position. Obviously the main switch could be bad but it has seemed fine in the past.

Has anyone else seen this?

If you want more responses I would recommend you start a new post and tell everyone the year make and model of you coach.

The house battery disconnect switch will only disconnect the batteries. If, you are on shore power, the inverter/charger will continue to supply 12 volt power to all of the coach.

I found this when I had a problem with the disconnect relay and bypassed it.

Boy now I am confused. I thought the inverter used 12 volt from the batteries to supply 120 volt AC to the coach and the charger section charges the house batteries. When you are on shore power I thought a relay in the inverter energized and sent the shore power to the coach. How does the inverter provide 12 volts?

Dave,

You are not confused. The inverter does take 12 volts DC from the storage batteries and inverts it to 120 volts AC. However, when you are on shore power the Inverter/Converter are working together to charge the batteries and also supply 12 volts DC to the coach. Doesn't matter whether your batteries are connected or not. The reason is, the main disconnect only disconnects the batteries, it doesn't disconnect the Inverter/Converter. If you were to disconnect the mains and also turn your Inverter/Converter off, then you won't have any 12 volt DC inside the coach.

At least that's the way it is on my coach.

Thanks for the info Richard. Next time I am at the coach I will look at the wiring. Just though that the manual disconnect would have cut the 12 volts out of the battery bay to the rest of the coach, that what I get for thinking. I do understand that the inverter/charger would provide 12 volts to the coach even if there were no house batteries.

12 volts will not give you a jolt. However if you were to touch the positive red (cable) to ground it will cause a loud spark and could possibly weld it to ground and cause some serious electrical problems. Always best to disconnect the battey cable. Sometimes those mickey mouse battery disconnect switches are bad and don't connect or disconnect.

Relays fall into 3 groups in regards to your post

1: 120 volt circuit, what you do with the batteries will make absolutely no difference.

2: 12 volt "House circuit" If you cut off the disconnect it should remove all power from this relay

3: 12 volt "Battery" side relays.. There is one and only one to chill out this kind of relay. DISCONNECT THE BATTERIES.

Without knowing what that relay does for a living, I can not tell you where it appears so the best advice is disconnect both 12 volt power and SHORE power.. NOTE: you need to disconnect SHORE power in any case.

Thanks to all for your comments. Very helpful. I did find a statement in my Xantrex manual under battery charging which states that full charger output is available to operate 12V items on the system when in float charge stage.

My apologies to Mathew for bending the topic a bit.

Thanks guys for all the help. I replaced the Monico Relay for Battery disconnect (Salesman switch) and I am still having an issue. I started another post for DC lights.

Thanks
