Beaver/Tires
I'm considering buying a 2003 Beaver patriot thunder, my first question is thoughts? I'm new and don't have any idea how much I should pay at a dealer compared to what the NADA low retail is.
My second and possibly more important question is tires. I've seen on previous posts that they are pretty important and you can't go by tread depth. I don't know the date codes yet but how old should I expect? Say if they are past a certain age, should I walk away if they refuse to replace them (at least the front ones)? after buying this MH I won't be able to afford 6 or 7K for new tires for awhile. sorry about the newbie questions but if it wasn't for these great forum posts I wouldn't even know this much. Thank you in advance.

Dealers will be all over the map on cost, so you keep beating on them and get the price as low as you can. Compare their cost with the same coach out on the internet. Tires, as far as age usually its 6 or 7 years and replace if not sooner, usually you will not wear them out they age out. Another thing that kills tires is sidewall damage, one curb can kill a tire in short order. Tires all have a DOT date code on them it goes by week/year. All of mine are 3212= 32 week 2012 year, I copied a code from the TireTech site and this is how they usually will appear.
In the example above:
DOT U2LL LMLR 5107
51 Manufactured during the 51st week of the year
07 Manufactured during 2007

PPL motors reports selling a couple of Dynasties and a Beaver Patriot (not Thunder) all '03 models for between $77-85,000. Sales were during the last year.
The generally accepted life of motorhome tires is around 7 years. If they are 4-5 years old then you need to try to build some tire allowance into the price. If much over 5 years, make new tires part of the deal.

I agree with all the posts that have been made. You should be able to get between 20 to 30% below low nada low retail (no ad ons from nada just the coach) good luck the thunder is a good coach

If you can get any maintainence records very helpful and will give you an idea of how the coach has been maintained. Regular maintainence is critical for these DP. Hopefully will have all the manuals etc that came with the coach when new. Figure $600 per tire through Monaco International or FMCA

Thanks for the replies. still working the deal but they are pretty stuck at the price and aren't willing to do too much dickering. now about 6K below low retail and holding. tires are from 08 but no signs of dry rot at all. I'll make my decision by Sunday or so.

Tires don't show signs of aging and motorhomes tires typically look great on the day that they are replaced. My advise is to have a plan to replace the tires in mind when you make the deal. You will have no way of knowing if these tires have been run under inflated or taken a big curb hit over the last 6 years. If I helps, replace the steer tires soon then the drive a year later. The tag a year after that. Also consider a TPMS.

Thanks to all for advice. I bought it today. Tires looked good and oldest had date code of 2010. Price wound up at 85K. Nada was around 93 so not as good as some but not too bad. Original when new was 384K. Great dealer, they are fixing everything and looking for more to fix as part of the deal. If you're around Central Florida I recommend Orlando RV in Winter Park. I appreciate all the advice.
