Best way East
Hey guys
We are planning a trip this summer to the Maritimes in Canada. First part of the trip we are going to see old friends in Columbus Ohio. We are leaving from LA area. Which way to go?
Need your advice. Do I go over the Rockies, or south on Hwy 40? So is it hwy 40, 70 or even 80?

I70 eastbound to Denver traverses some beautiful country. Plus I15 up from Vegas to I70 is scenic in its own right.

How many days are going to take to get to Columbus?
If you are NOT interested in the scenery (But just getting there) I-70 is great in Kansas and eastward. in fact it will take you directly to Columbus.
I prefer I-40 into Oklahoma City where it meets with I-44(Toll road) which gets you to St Louis and you can get on I-70. ( I-40 and I-44 are part of the old U.S. Route 66 lots to see along that route.

My favorite route east or west (done it 5 times now) is US 50 to UT then 70 to Denver north to US 30, the 30 to the PA, OH line. US 80 to US81 to 84 then to 95 ate the MA NH boarder and on to the Maritimes. You want to stay south of Chicago.

I travel this route several times a year. From the LA Area. Approximately 35-40 hour travel time.
SUMMER
I-15 to Barstow
I-40 to OK city.
I-44 to St Louis (I-44 through OK is a toll road)
I-70 to Columbus Ohio
WINTER
I-10 to Las Cruces, NM
US-70 to Tularosa, NM
US-54 to Santa Rosa, NM
I-40 to OK City
I-44 to St Louis
I-70 to Columbus
(This route bypasses most of the I-40 high altitude mountains through Calif, AZ, and NM.)

Thanks everybody for the great directions. I will plot all of this on an old fashioned AAA paper map of the U.S. GPs is not the best for planning a real long trip.

Avoiding Chicago is a real must. We travel it in Dec going west and in Late Mar going east. Weather determines the route since I40 gets some real altitude thru Az And NM. We got stranded in a snowstorm just east of Albuquerque for about 6 hrs till the plows came thru. Luckily we had the AquaHot to keep us warm!!
I15 can be a parking lot on the way to Vegas depending on what day you leave and weather is a real consideration going over the Rockies on I70 thru Denver.
