Brake air cylinder detached from hub
By chance I happened to notice this. The spring brake air canister is completely unbolted from the hub on the curb side drive axle. The two top bolts are gone and the two bottom ones are still there but undamaged, no stripped threads. Almost looks like they just back out all by themselves. So it's hanging there by the piston I guess. And the piston is backed out about 2 inches. Anyone know how to get the piston pressed back in so I can bolt it back to the hub? I'm at a complete loss.

I possible run a bolt in to see that it goes in without effort. If you can run the bolt in ok, then use a little Lock_tite on the bolts and rebolt the flane back up.

I tried that. It doesn't want to go in easily. I figured it has to be similar to a hydraulic system in that it can be pressed in like I do on my car with a c clamp. But these brakes are a whole lot bigger! Thanks for the suggestion.

Though I tackle many mechanical jobs on the MH, I think I would leave this fix to a professional. My understanding is that air brake cylinders are not something to treat casually.

That's what's called a "s cam" most likely you will have to pull the wheels and drum to remove the brake shoes. Then push the cam back in and bolt it up with lock tight. Put the shoes back on and the drum on and wheels.

Does it make a difference if the brakes are disc brakes? My local RV shop is about 5 miles away. Is this ok to drive like this?

You would run the risk of losing some expensive parts on the road , and or locking the wheel up and not being able to move the coach.
Drum spring air brakes have a " caging bolt " that can be inserted and tightened to release the spring tension , I can't see the bottom of the chamber to see if air disc brakes have the same , with the added slack , the auto adjuster has probably over adjusted , complicating things.
I'll see if my, air brake, training manuals have any info on the disc set up.

I could only find pictures of a front axle air disc brake set up , and it looks nothing like what you have .
In order for the shaft to come out as far as it has the inside of the caliper may be shot, if my thinking on the operation is correct, the shaft has to be treaded or ramped to push the pads against the rotor, when the air is applied and twists the shaft. there would be a way to reset the caliper but it may only be possible with the shoes and caliper removed from the axle.

If you are in San Antonio there should be quite a few mobile truck repair shops that could come to you and fix that problem. They will have the equipment to jack the axle up and remove the wheel. If it were my coach I would not want to drive it.
