My DW makes bread all the time. She's a keeper! Last winter (5months) I think we bought 1 loaf of store bought bread. We pack an old Black and Decker bread maker with us but she only uses it to go through the mixing process and takes it out to rise and then bakes in the convention oven. That way we get a properly shaped loaf without the hole in the bottom.

We have a Zojirushi BB-HAC10 Home Bakery 1-Pound-Loaf Programmable Mini Breadmaker that we use regularly. One or two loaves a week. We got this one because it's smaller than any others we saw, and very highly rated.

To the first question "YES"
To the second question: There are so many bread machines that I would have a hard time recommending one.. The one I have is a 1 pound machine... (I'd rather have a 1.5 pounder) I have given a few different models away and all were very good.

For 2 people thought the 1 pounder is about the right size

Home made bread makes what you find in the store... Stay in the store! (Unless the store is a bakery of course.. I still buy specialty breads at the bakery. The one bakery makes Bacon, Egg and Cheese bread.. Kind of... Different)

We have an inexpensive Oster model. We just replaced our old Oster that must have been at least 15 years old. I use it to mix and raise the dough and then bake in the oven. I mostly use it to make pizza dough. Since I have never been able to master bread making on my own, the machine is wonderful.

Lynnvt.. I have to fully agree... At a Pot Luck last fall I used the machine on the dough cycle, and then baked mini-loaves in the oven

You should have heard the commends when those loves hit the table

(And if only the people enjoying the bread knew how much work it was not what with the machine doing all the hard labor)

I carry that bread machine I used to have at home. I don't make bread very much with it because it makes a 2 lb loaf. We have one of our daughters with us and it takes her about 1 day to demolish the loaf. I like the Chocolate Chocolate Chip bread. Very chocolaty but not a real sweet loaf. I also like it to knead dough (I make Stollen from scratch at Christmas).
