Only two reasons I can think of, and they are both quite lame: use a smaller hitch as cost savings (which would be pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things) or use a smaller hitch as a marketing tool to try and get people to step up to a larger coach if they need the towing capacity.

Like I said, both reasons are pretty lame. That means that the reduced hitch capacity is because something in the rig (engine, frame, axles, transmission, brakes, suspension, wheels, tires, etc) can't handle more weight. It all depends on the weakest link. Nobody on this forum is really going to be able to answer that question -- just because someone else's rig has a higher tow rating doesn't mean yours can also handle that weight: they may have a different "weakest link" that isn't immediately obvious. The only way to know for sure is to hear from the engineer(s) who decided the rating back in 2000.

Not sure if you have tried this but call Monaco with the vin#. They have been very helpful when I had questions.

I had a 2000 dip with the 315 cummins and mh3000 trans and pulled a 25ft enclosed trailer over 10000 miles no problems. But that said never got conformation that it was a 10000 lbs hitch from Monaco. Pulled it in the Rockies must watch temp in altitude.
