Hi Guys and Gals,
I've noticed that my electric Carefree Awning seems to be rolling up slower than usual. It rolls out just fine, probably due to the force of gravity, but lately it seems slower than usual when I retract it. It does roll up and it actually seems a little quicker the closer it gets to the motorhome. I'm in Arizona right now, could it possibly have something to do with the heat? It's getting hotter now in April. (90's in the sun)
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thank you,
Tom Brickwell

Tom.....Mine has always been slow......I can take a guess at a few things.....
1) Pull the plug at the top right and clean the contacts.
2) Find the ground and power connections and clean.
3) Is it possible the support pistons...in the sun.... are buliding up a little more gas pressure...or are they hydraulically dampened.

Just some thoughts.

Tom,

I noticed that ours was slow and it had a distinct squeak as well. Took the screws out of the covers one at a time, greased the gear side and oiled the other side.

Seems faster and no longer squeaks. Also oiled all of the pivot points while I was at it.

Acording to Carefree technicians it should roll up in less than 50 seconds. If it does then it is ok.

Mine is also slow. I'll have to check out the 50 second roll up...never timed it before.

I called Carefree and the tech told me 32 seconds. Ours rolls up in 47 seconds consistantly. They said it's probably the gears or the motor. We do hear a grinding noise when it rolls up.
I'll let Guaranty RV in Junction City, OR deal with it. The awning is still under Carefree's warranty.
Good to know about the lubrication though.
Thanks all.
Tom

Possible issues causing slow roll up are:

Lubrication (Covered above)

Low batteries

Bad connection (electrical) Measure voltages at teh following points

Motor itself (or at least the output of the controller) Controller power in lines

Battery/batteries and last Elsewhere in rig

Readings should all be nearly identical, though with that much load there will be some drop.. If the drop seems excessive... Look for a dirty connection.

Has anyone unplugged the power cord to the unit? I've had the awning fail to roll up and a couple of pokes with a broom on the connector got it going again. I got up there and gave it a tug but it dodn't budge. is that a straight plug in or a twist lok plug?

The power plug on my original Carefree awning was a twist lok, ***AND*** had a metal locking tab on the top that had to be pulled back to allow the plug to twist.

Interesting info. Thanks all.
I have a 1997 Monaco Windsor with a Carefree of Colorado awning with the wind sensor. If it's too windy out it will automatically roll up. The sensor is triggered by the speed of a little 3 legged spinner located on the top of my coach. It's made of plastic, looks like 3 1/2 shells on the end of arms. One arm is broken. I called Carefree and they said they don't have parts for this anymore. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement spinner?
In advance, Thanks
