Cargo heater

I know this has been a on going story, but, here goes. My 2011 Knight has a 12v heater in the wet bay. When it's switched on from inside, the fan comes on but not any heat. I took it out and put it on the bench and got the fan going. Question, what are the wires for? There is a red, white and black. I see inside there are two limit switches. I shorted them, but, no heat. Any wiring diagram out there?

This is for a 2012 but the file was released in march of 2011 so is probably the same.

Here is another diagram from Monaco that matches my wiring that I have in my 2002 Windsor.

Looking at the heater, it only has one cable coming out of it, black, white and red. Tomorrow I'll get down and try and find the snap disk, but, looking at the schematic I can't tell if the motor and element are connected together. Like I said, the fan comes on.
By the way, the active light comes on when I flip the switch and this morning both lights were on.

If the other light came on that means your Snap Disc is working correctly. I would bet that your problem is inside the heater and possibly a fuse or the element is shot. Most likely you will need to remove the heater and take it apart to see what's going on.

I did take it apart. In the morning I'll check and see if I get 12v to the heater elements and look for a fuse, etc.

There should also be a relay inside that activates the heating element. That could be another problem area.

On bay heater there three controls for the fan & thermostat for heat separate.

Yours may be different. If you do not have separate controls it may be set up for the fan and heating elements to come on time.

Is there a model number on your fan??

I just fixed my cargo heater in my 2011 Knight. Inside the heater, there is a thermal fuse attached (crimped) to one side of the heater element. The other side of the fuse is crimped to a wire. I bought the fuse at Radio Shack for under a buck. Used vise grips to open the crimp connectors enought to replace the fuse and then to crimp it back together. This is the thermal fuse:

443°F (228°C) Thermal Protector Fuse - Radioshack

Easy fix, good luck!

An open thermal fuse is the most common problem with the 12 volt bay heaters. There are several threads years back on this topic.

I'll get down quick before RS goes out of business. Thanks
I think I shorted across this but it did not come on.

Did a little test. I shorted across the thermal fuse. Like before, the fan only works. I took a resistance reading across the heater elements and got zero. I did get 12v at the heater core when hooked up on the bench. I also put 12v directly on the heater contacts and got nothing. I believe the elements are open.

RWeigant - Not sure I am reading your last post correctly, but if you have zero ohms across the heater element, then that means it will draw current when voltage is applied. If I remember correctly, they are very slow to heat up, maybe 3 minutes before you feel the heat. Did you leave the 12v across the heater long enough to let it heat up?
