Steve, our Trek came with a central vacuum and having a Cocker Spaniel that does a fair amount of shedding, I am thrilled to have that unit. It definitely is more powerful than those stand-alone vacuums. Our's was missing the hose and accessories when we purchased out new Trek, so after some months I went to Central Vacuum Factory - Your complete source for central vacuum systems, parts, and accessories and proceeded to the Central Vacuum - Eureka section where all the systems and accessories were well described. You might want to take a look at the Eureka Yellowjacket CV-140 unit. It mounts on the upper side in one of our bays and really doesn't consume that much space. The accessories bundled up fairly tightly, too, for storage.

We have the DD CV950 as well and love it. I mounted it midships so the hose reaches both ends of the 40'. Bought it off EBay and took about 45 mins to install. All the attachments, beater bar, wands hose etc. store in one small drawer. ...Dennis

Not for us

I installed a Dirt Devil CV950 a couple years ago. We almost never use it.

It has terrific suction, but it is no more convenient to use that our upright vac, and the beater bar on that one really cleans the carpet well. The little vacuum powered beater bar on the CV950 is small, so it takes many more strokes to cover the same area, and it doesn't have anything like the cleaning power of our upright.

The CV950 is good for vacuuming slick surfaces like tile, but the upright does that as well. We simply flip the switch and turn off the beater bar.
