Changing to wet hubs?

I am about due for a front wheel bearing pack and think now is the time to switch to wet hubs, I understand Stemco is the manufacture, has anyone done the conversion, and if so how do I find out what kit to buy?, mine is a 2005 Dynasty 40', does the supplier have a list that covers my rig?, just looking for some direction, I plan on buying the kit and have a local truck shop install

I had Josam in Orlando do mine. It was little more than just repacking and they got all the parts I needed.

We had it done on our 2001 Diplomat by Cummins Northwest in Coburg, OR. They charged $659.08, all in. Don't remember the parts/labor breakdown but suspect that the labor was the larger portion.

FWIW

Ron do you have over 100,000 on your coach? I did my coach at 70,000 because I wanted wet hubs but it sure didn't need repacking. This is what I used on a 2000 Dyn, wheel bearing seal SKF 35058, hub cap for oil hubs SKF 1612, the bearings if needed Timken #HM212049 and 3782.
The sockets needed are 2 5/8 and 2 1/4 also be very careful how you preload the bearings there is another thread on this forum with that info.

X2 on Josam's. Since I was out of country my wife took the rig there and had toe work done. They also inspected the chassis and did some minor repairs. Total cost was ~$450. Afterwards I talked to the shop foreman to find out what oil to have on hand and when to change. He said I should just check the oil level but should never have to worry about changing it.

Something to Ponder

I was ready to switch to oilers also but when I pulled mine apart after 80K miles the bearing looked perfect with grease. I know they had never been done before so why spend $500 for something a five dollar quart of grease will cover for 80K more miles? Plus heaven help you if it leaks after it's installed. I doubt that happens often but I'm sure it has to someone..........

I just packed mine after 40K miles and they were in perfect shape. It is interesting that there is a large area around the spindle that holds tons of grease. I suspect that grease is slung out against the bearings.

I doubt they will ever get repacked in my lifetime. I am the original owner so know it has never been done.

It was a messy project of course but the satisfaction of doing it myself and being able to clean the brakes and inspect the drums sure made it worth the effort. Using my little wand on the pressure washer allowed me to get in close and clean up the whole area. Looks like new now.

The most difficult part was removing the lug bolts. The drums came off easily.

The torque multiplier tool just purchased on Amazon made the removal amazingly simple. It really is an ingenious tool.

Had wet hubs on a 91 Beaver Marquis. Drove it 154,000+ miles and no problems. Changed the packed hubs on our Monaco 44,000 miles ago to wet. Again no problems or leaks.

I have switched over a couple of friends' coaches to wet hubs and they had been fine with grease, the owners just wanted oil lube. Six of one half a dozen of the other as far as I am concerned. I have had both and have not any issues with either. They require maintenance either way but not enough to warrant a huge deciding factor one way or the other.

One of the differences between the Spartan and the Roadmaster chassis is wet hubs vs. grease hubs. I'd love to change mine over, so I'm watching this thread.

I changed mine over also. Cost me 2 seals and 2 Stemco hub caps and around 2 hours of labor in the driveway. less than $100.00 plus Mobile One 75W90 full synthetic gear oil. They were due for repack at the time and something that large made no sense why they were not oil filled in the first place.

Wow, 2 hours! That's great.

I've thought about it. The first issue is how do I jack it up (where to place the jack and what size)!

Then I guess I'd need either a 3/4" impact, or a torque multiplier with a huge socket for the lug nuts.
After that, how do you maneuver the tire and wheel assembly around. It must weigh 200#.
Is there anything special you need to pull the old grease bearings and seals out?

You can repack and or change to oil hubs without removing the lug nuts on drum brake axles.

Remove the wheel bearing nuts and slide the whole thing off with a hand truck or a greased piece of sheet metal.
