Clean Radiator

I'm going to have to clean my rad in the next month or so and was wondering what to use. I have come across to use

1-Extreme Simple Green
2-Simple Green Pro HD

Is one better than the other to use.

Thanks Trap

Good question. I wasn't aware of the Pro HD one.

I use #2. From what I read the pro HD is safe for aluminum which is what my radiator is made of. I'm not sure about the extreme simple green. It may or may not be aluminum safe.
I also mix some Dawn dish washing detergent in with it. I use a one gallon pump up sprayer to coat everything.

I added a hose bib to the top of my home hot water heater.
Us that for engine de-greasing,,,,it "should" help with the radiator cleaning, but I have not tried that yet...used cold water previously.

Regards,

Dan

The Pro HD is safe to use and I have used it on my plane and in cleaning radiators and
CAC's or all types.
Hot water should help just do not let the Pro HD dry before flushing it off.

Mine had never been cleaned, so i removed both the radiator and CAC. Started the cleaning process with Dawn dish detergent and Oil Eater, the Dawn works really well and the Oil Eater is minimally corrosive to aluminum. cleaned the CAC first, as I had Extreme Simple Green ordered. Thought it looked pretty clean and was surprised at how much more dirt and grease came out when I used the Extreme Simple Green, which is sold as an aircraft cleaner also safe for aluminum. 5 Gallons on Amazon for $80. I also used hot water.

I cleaned mine last summer with the "spray from a can" Gunk engine cleaner and it worked pretty good. I believe the previous owner never cleaned it because it was really grimy and I was experiencing overheating issues.

I have since found the attached document from Cummins on how to clean the radiator. I was never in the power washer camp, so I was surprised to see it recommended by Cummins for my engine. It does have a disclaimer about the task being undertaken by suitably trained and qualified personnel.

I have cleaned mine with a pressure washer with good results. It is a 3,000psi washer so I turned the pressure down about 1/3 - 1/2. I alsopre-treated the radiator with Awsome from the Dollar store. This detergent works really great and doesn't leave a bad smell like Gunk. I put about 5 bottles in a pump sprayer and spray down the radiator real well from both sides. Then, after letting it soak for about 15 minutes, I wash it out with the pressure washer. It is amazing how much dirt and gunk that comes out.

I actually like the smell of Gunk. It reminds me of my first car I had in High School. The smell is up the on my list right between tire store and lumber yard.

I hadn't cleaned our '02 DSDP for 11 years, but it was a side radiator too. I was amazed at how many pine needles I got out from between the CAC and radiator.

Ha, me too, all the above along with the paint, bondo, etc. I don't think any of it is good for you, which is reinforced by my wife every time she comes into the garage. Following a chip truck down the road is pretty good too.

My rad is clean as I just had it re-cored, but I've always just used water. I may try something different next time now that I know what others do.
