How many of you clean the water spigot before hooking up your waterhose? This morning I watched a man wash out his sewer hose with the hose right up to the spigot!!! I always sanitize mine before I hook up!

I have a small spray bottle with a weak bleach and water mix that I keep in my sewer compartment. I spray the faucet before I hook up my fresh water hose. Just be carefull, because it is bleach after all...Don;t want spotted clothes...

I also spray the threads with a bleach/water solution. Should be a proper punishment for washing out your sewer hose with the fresh water in a park.

For cleaning with bleach/water mix the health dept requires that it be mixed fresh and thrown out after 24 hours. It loses it's disinfecting properties that quickly.

I use straight peroxide in a spray bottle as it doesn't deteriorate as quickly.

I take a portable lighter and place the flame around the threads for a few seconds to sterilize it....

I just rinse the nozzle and threads with the water for a few seconds. Really, how much bacteria is going to be stuck to the threads (even if it hasn't been a day or so since it was last used) and how is that bacteria is going to be able to make its way from the threads into my drinking water supply. How do you think that little bit will survive in your chlorinated water supply? Some get all crazy about the possibility that some animal may have urinated on the connection. That's a possibility. Rinse it off for your own peace of mind, it's sterile anyway. How gross did this discussion become?

I keep a bottle of green isopropl alchohl in the wet bay and spray both the faucet and hose ends and also turn the faucet on a few seconds in case a but has crawled up it.

When I was a college student (many years ago) I was taking a color photography class and we were learning to mix our chemicals when the professor said this about clean water: 'It's important. But on the other hand there isn't a drop of water on this planet that hasn't been through somebody or something at least once.'

I have a special hose I only use for cleaning out the sewer line.

I have sanitized the faucet ever since I read this thread.....starting next time. It may not help but at least I can think it does.

I'm an EMT, there is a saying among EMTs if it's wet and not yours don't stick your fingers in it.

Having said that, I don't sanitize the hose bib, i turn it on to wash out any critters living in it and rise the threads as I do.

We have a lot of sayings actually, my favorite being "Dead is dead, it's pretty clear cut"
"Yeah, until we show up with drugs and jumper cables and argue about it!"
