For years, my overflow tank has leaked out of two plugs that are screwed in at the middle of the tank and are visible when the rear doors are open. The two 1/2" plugs are there to plug holes that are used for other mounting options. I've removed the plugs several times and wrapped them in teflon tape to prevent leaking. After every stop, I always had a small amount of seepage from both plugs. Since they are adjacent to where my radiator started leaking, I was slow in discovering the leak. I always figured the smell of coolant was coming from these plugs. You can see the drippings in the photo below.
When I changed the radiator out the other day, I decided to remove the plugs (again) and seal them with silicone this time. Once I had them out I went through my bolt box and looked for a bolt, washer and rubber washer that could be used. I found an old drain plug with a large built in head that was perfect. I added a rubber washer and screwed it in. The problem was that I only had one. I went to Pep Boys and bought another. The tank is now sealed and drip free. I believe there are two on the backside of the tank......but I'll deal with that later. I don't know if those are leaking.
Below is a photo of the packaging (bolt size) that I used. The one I used is a metric size, because the SAE size looked wrong. Either way, the thread size is almost identical and since the tank is plastic, it wasn't an issue.
Monaco Mama....check out the size of the photos....finally figured out what I was doing wrong!
