Dash Air Question

My dash air is just barely cool so I'm assuming it is low on refrigerant. There is a connection just above the generator which fits the R-134 kit connection. So is this the correct location to add R-134 and is it also done as in an automobile with the AC on high cool mode? TIA.

Good evening Jeff; Yes you are correct. Should be 2 connections. One for low pressure, or the suction side, and the other the high pressure, compressor side. If your not sure which is which, the suction side is where you add your Freon. It is also the line that will be cold to the touch. The best way to add is go to a local auto parts store, like Auto Zone, and they will let you use a set of gauges to fill the system. That way you can keep an eye on the low and high side. Yes when charging, have the A/C on max. cool. On my previous 2000 Windsor I had to add about 12 oz. of Freon to increase the cooling. Easy job. Just make sure you do not over fill the system. Also another thing to check is to make sure your heater valve in the gen. compartment is operating correctly. Sometimes when the valve gets old it might not close all the way. This would allow hot coolant to enter the heater core and that would mix with the cold air from the evaporator making it seem like the A/C is not working properly. Feel the hoses to the heater core to make sure that when the dash control is set to the cold position that no hot coolant is making it's way into the heater core. Another good reason for using gauges when checking the dash A/C. Hope this answered some of your questions and good luck with your repair!

If you are using gauges for the first time, you will have the refrigerant can connected on the center hose (yellow) and the blue hose connects to Low side, Red hose to high side. The fittings are different sizes (high side fitting is smaller).

My reason for posting is to tell you to be sure to never open the high side gauge valve when charging the system (meaning the red knob should be fully closed).

If you open the high side knob, the high side pressure will go into the refrigerant can and cause it to pop open (explode).

The gauges still read pressure when the knobs are closed (opening the knob just connects the hose (red or blue) to the center port (yellow).

Thanks for the advice. Never thought about the heater control linkage so I will definitely check that and be careful with the knobs as well. I'll give it a shot of refrigerant this week to see if it helps. Thanks again.
