Dash generator switch. It wasn't the switch.

The dash switch for the generator had not been working for the past 3 or 4 weeks. When the coach was in the shop recently for generator service, I asked them to determine why I could not start it from the dash switch. They said it was the switch. I then ordered a new switch, determined to install it myself after a one week outing with the coach. After installing the new switch (see photos), I was still unable to start the gen from the dash. Using my voltmeter, I confirmed that there was no power to the terminal wires. I should be able to detect power to the terminals, right? I did detect power to the posts on the busbar in the front run electrical box assigned to the generator (see photos). According to the front run layout in the owners manual, the posts for the generator are the top four on the busbar to the extreme right in the photo. Note: Using the switch on the generator itself, it starts without problem.

Does anyone have a wiring schematic?

Has anyone had this issue and know where to look?

Thanks for your consideration.

I haven't had the problem , however there is a connector in a harness that
runs along the pass side of the gen .
This connector gets wet and causes problems and possibly your problem as well .
Find that connector and try to clean it up or at least wiggle it to see if the gen
will start from inside if it does you know where the problem is .

Good luck , let us know

Thanks, RamiDav, I will try that and post results.

I have wiring diagrams for the 2005 Monterey (see link in my signature line to "Wiring Diagrams>2001-2005 Beaver...>2005 Monterey Wiring Diagrams FULL SET"), however those diagrams don't show the dash generator start switch wiring.

The 2003-2005 Patriot wiring looks to be identical - so this drawing for 2003 Patriot Center Dash (has Gen Start switch) may be helpful.

In the photo of your front Run/Elect Bay, what is that item mounted in upper right corner with the blue cable? Other than that, your Run/Elec setup looks like mine.

Thanks, Mike, I have printed those out. Getting out my magnifying glass now. :-)
The item mounted with the blue cable is the control module for the AGS.

I got a chance to briefly check that out around noon and it didn't have any effect. Didn't detect any corrosion on the leads, but then the monsoon came and I had to close things up. Still raining and blowing like crazy here in coastal Delaware. "A real frog strangler," as they say in Texas.

Sandy, very often these problems are due to a bad ground or loose connection. I had the same problem with the gen switch that is in the middle of the coach. The problem was traced to a loose connection on one of the wires to the gen auto-start box in a rear bay! Check for ground first , then look for loose connections.

Thanks for the reply, but to what do you refer when you say "controller" and where might that be located?

Thanks, I had not thought of checking the AGS controller.

Mike, your dash switches appear different than mine as to number of terminals and connector wires (at least compared to your schematic). Do you know if yours is a Carling Technologies V8D1?

I second the comment by RamiDav. Check the harness anywhere from 2 to 8 feet back from where it attaches to the top of the generator. That harness runs along the frame and the splice connectors get beat up from the elements. Very likely the source of your problem.
