Diagnostic connectors--1998 HR Diesel - Cummins, Freightliner

I was having some trouble with my oil gauge so I decided to purchase a Scangauge D for my 1998 HR Endeavor Diesel. Before I bought it I wanted to be sure I had the right kind of connectors. From everything I've read, my rig should have a round, 6 or 9 pin connector under the dash . I think I found a round connector (which I haven't figured out how to get the cover off of yet), but I also found another rectangular connector labeled "Diagnostic connector" (I thought that was a dead giveaway ). I've included photos. What am I looking at? Thanks!!

The rectangular connector is your obd2 diagnostic port. The round thing seems to have a label on it. What does it read.

but I was under the impression that I had to get the Scangauge D, which has a round connector, for diesels in this age class. I'll have to look at it again. I couldn't tell what it said on the round thing.

the cap should unscrew from the round one. there may also be another one up further next to the steering column

I was under the impression that the 1998 was a mechanical engine.

I have 99 HR endeavor and the 3rd pic looks like my buzzer for jacks down or low air. The j1939 port for the scangauge has 2 round connectors one on each end, keep digging under the dash and it will be there. Heres a thread with a pic of one end of the round connector to plug into.

Mine is a 1998.5 motor I believe the later 1/2 of the 1998 year is when they went to electronic so maybe he has one.

And my coach is 98 not 99 like i said above.

I just uploaded to the "Files" section a copy of the 1998 Endeavor Brochure which states that it is an electric engine.

OBDII came out for cars and small trucks in 1996. The larger trucks, since they were a much smaller percentage of sales, did not have to comply in 1996. They were allowed to release in the next year or two.

Remember what CAFE stands for? It's Corporate Average Fuel Economy.

Following! Have a 1998 Dynasty with 6C8.3 Cummins and bought VMSpc after having them come look at my coach in Perry, GA to insure that it would work. Well I have the J???? whatever connector but it's just for the Allison apparently as I've never been able to get anything from the diagnostic software. Good luck.

Round device is pezioelectric buzzer - front tabs adjust opening for audio volume - close off to make quieter

I have the same gauge you are referring to. It comes with the round type and can fit in either the 6 or 9 pin.

The outcome

Just wanted to followup but I was awaiting this reply from Cummins which says that this engine is mechanical - does not have an ECM. I guess I should have started with that and saved some time. I believe a couple of posters said this might be the case. I think someone said that Cummins didn't start using ECMs with these engines until the 2nd half of 1998 :

"Our records show that your engine (ESN 453687**) is a mechanical B5.9. This means it is mechanically controlled so it won't have an ECM. If there is any type of diagnostic port, it would have been supplied by the OEM (chassis manufacturer). You will need to reach out to them for further information.

Regards,
QuickServe Online Customer Support
Cummins Inc."

And as several have said, the round thing in the 1st photo is an alarm and the rectangular one is a diagnostic port for the Allison transmission.
