Seems to me this is for sure KISS in execution. Not in Keep It Simple Stupid (My normal method of operation!), but in KISS the assistant that made all things happen.

It's just so easy to assume some Dude crawling around on an engine, tracing wires, cutting and splicing, and then politely saying 'Dear, crank the engine!' - is the main cause for it now running. The truth be told, a 'lovely assistant' deserves the credit on this one... Sure hope the OP took her to dinner to thank her...

GOOD JOB OP!!! And thanks for sharing. Time, wear, vibrations - all have an effect on us. (I mean, our engines!!)...

Best,
Smitty

BigPapaYams,

FWIW….

Soldering a wire to the ring terminal is probably not a good long term fix. Vibration/movement will cause the wire to break at the point where the solder stopped wicking up the wire. There is no stress relief with this type of connection.

A longer term fix is to crimp on a new ring terminal.

I had trouble with my fuel solenoid. The pull in part wouldn't work sometimes. I would
turn the key pull it up and then start the engine. Next time it would work. Finally it died.
It was a weekend, Cummins closed so went on line and got one on Amazon for about 1/4
of the price. I ran it for a few days with a spring, wire, pulley and a bungy cord.

[QUOTE=MnTom;3510958]Just keep in mind that if you only turn the key to the run position the solenoid will not pull up. There are three wires going to it. One is the wire that puts power to the run coil (used to hold the plunger up for it to run), one puts power to the start coil (the one that actually pulls it up), and the ground wire.[/QUOTE

MnTom: So the fuel solenoid does not get power until the start coil is energized?

BigPappaYams: Thanks for the excellent post that will no doubt help someone in the future.
