I am a newbie to the diesel. I am going to look at 2002 Cayman 34'. It has a 275 Cummins, I am calling on all of the experience on this great site. Is this enough engine to tow and get me over the mountains, I am currently in a 92, 30' Holiday Rambler with a 454, so it would have to be an improvement. Thanks for any advice and opinions you can give me, Randy

Hi Randy -
Based purely on speculation, I would think the 275 Cummins would be fine for the 34'. I have a 330 Cummins for my 40' 33k GVW + Jeep combo. It moves me along just fine.

If you want to play with some numbers, I made up a Horsepower Calculator a while back that allows you to enter a bunch of variables to see how much theoretical horsepower is needed to move you along. May not completely answer your question, but it is kind of fun putting in the numbers

I went from a 34' V10-powered Bounder to this 40' diesel and can't ever see myself going back to gas. Love the coach, and Monaco has proven to be a solid company to work with. Wishing the same for you.

I agree. IMO, the Cummins ISB from that era is a very good engine. You'll save a lot of money on fuel with that engine. I had one on a '99 36 foot Fleetwood Discovery and had no problem at all with it.

The only complaint I had was that it was a little slow out of the gate to get up to speed - like when pulling out onto an interstate. I fixed that with the addition of a Banks TLC kit, which takes that engine from 275 HP to around 330 hp, with no loss in fuel economy. You can see more information HERE that I had posted on my Discovery web site.

The 34' Cayman, however, is a smaller coach than the Discovery, so you might not feel the need for a Banks kit. OTOH, if you like the Cayman and discover you do want a bit more power, a Banks kit is not difficult to add. It would offer all the power you would ever need for a 34' coach and it beats paying more money for a larger engine and then having to put up with less fuel economy in these days of high fuel prices.

cubontheridge, I had that outfit in a 34ft. Gulfstream. Got from Illinois to Alaska and back by way of the top of the world highway, pulling a L200 Saturn. Had NO trouble and averaged just over 11MPG. Sure hope my 36 ft. Cayman with a 300 does as good!.

I for one would want more power. I have a 2007 Dynasty with the cummins 400 and while it does OK, it still leaves a little to be desired. That's one of the reasons I just traded for a new 2008 Signature with the cummins 600. It has great power and (at least in the one I test drove) and I won't have any problems going over the mountains.
