Hello I need some help!!!!!!! My fan belts disintegrated off my 2006 diplomat(400 ISL) while going down the road.I only have 20,000 miles on. I called a mobile service, that was lost as to how to put on a new belt. He did put on a single 8 rib belt that got me home running off my chassis batteries. I keep telling him that My manual said that there suppose to be two belts but it was a waste of time and i did get home. Now for my problem--nowhere in my manual does it show a diagram how the belts go. so if someone out there has a diagram of how the belts go on or can draw a picture, please email me at spa_48@comcast.net THERE IS A UNDERSCORE BETWEEN THE a and 4 ON MY EMAIL ADDRESS THAT MY COMPUTER WON'T SHOW!!!!!

Thanks for all and any help
Steve

Take a look at my ISL 400. Without the radiator blocking the view, you can see how both belts snake around the pulleys.

Pic above is the same as my 06 so yours is probably the same config.

I write on the net over and over...make a diagram and keep it in the coach, before it breaks. AND carry a spare belt. some of these are hard to find. Lucky you found a good tech that got you moving.

Here's how I rethread the serpentine belt:
A) sight the belt planes to see if the Vee belts go on after or before the serpentine, first on is closest to engine, next on is next closest, etc.
B) for serpentine:
1) wrap belt around the crank pulley at bottom of engine (inside the vibration damper); this pulley has grooves so belt grooves face up
2) from here on up you have two sides, left & right, choose the side that doesn't include the tensioner pulley (in the case of ISC/ISL engines that would be the right side) and thread up from there.
3) belt goes over the next pulley based on ribs or flat pulley, ribs means belt to right of pulley, flat = left of pulley. Each time you meet a pulley the belt has to wrap at least some around the pulley to put tension on it. Continue around till you get to tensioner pulley just like slalom racing- one flag = go-to-the-left, other flag color = go-to-the-right.
4) if you get befuddled, hold that side then check out the necessary wraps on the tensioner pulley side. You should be able to eyeball your route within one pulley or less using this method, especially w/diesels which are simple.

Harry, I think your just trying to shame us into cleaning engines.
I know once I start there's no stopping.

Mike,
When you leave Tucson, you should head over to San Ramon, CA and show SPA48 how those belts thread around the pulleys. With your mechanical ability, you would have him fixed up in no time. And, as a benefit, you would be prepared to do your own, when the need arises.

When mine broke last summer, I called Freightliner with my VIN and then emailed me the routing diagram in about 5 minutes. Cummins could not help because FCCC adds some components after delivery.

a special Thanks to Harry for his beautiful picture that says it all, also to Mike for His step by step instructions. I did order a spare set of belts but they came to my home while we were on a two day short trip. Now the fun begins!!!!!
I drove doubles for BIg Brown, for thirty years before retiring but there we always had a mechanic nearby. Now I do as much of the wrenching as possible!!!!

Thanks again
steve

Mama,
The picture of the belt routing might be something worth keeping in a sticky like the wiring diagrams pdfs

Harry,
Thanks for the picture, I will keep it handy. Am I looking at the AC belt wrong, it almost looks like the ribbed (cogs) are facing out? I bet the real challenge on a rear radiator is getting enough prize on the tensioner.

Mark,
The ribs are on the outside of the belt. Some belt manufacturers call it a TOP COG belt.

For those of you with the rear radiator coaches, here are some pictures of the A/C compressor adjuster. There is a large jam nut that needs to be loosened and then the threaded shaft can be turned with a small wrench. There is only one adjuster on the compressor and there is one long pivot bolt on the curbside lower ear of the compressor. Does this mean I have to take more pictures and get the wrench sizes?
