Flow-Pur water softener maximum performance
After installing a FLOW-PUR Water Softener in my RV, everything seemed to function as expected – UNTIL we arrived at our winter destination. Arizona’s water is very, very hard. It is in excess of 25gps/425ppm – the limit of my tester. After two regenerations, 3gps/50ppm was the best I could do. I contacted Watts Technologies, which provide me additional steps to take during regeneration that resolved my issue. I can now obtain readings of zero.
Typical water hardness can be handled with the instructions enclosed with the new unit, but extremely hard water requires maximum performance from the Flow-Pur system. To obtain maximum performance one must assure maximum saturation of the resin with salt during regeneration. This can be done per the below process. The purpose of placing the salt mixture under pressure pushes the salt into places salt crystals would not normally go.
Leaving the salt in the unit for a longer period might increase the salt saturation of the resin.
Use a well fitting funnel to pour mixture into unit.
I installed my Flo-Pur in a bay of the RV. Removing the unit was a hassle, so I added a hose from the drain outlet through the floor to the exterior. A line to the inlet side of the unit was accomplished via appropriate valves to a permanent fresh water source to provide for reverse flushing.
Hopefully this might be of benefit to those seeking longer time between regeneration or better performance.

Turn off supply water to INLET valve.
If you don’t wish to remove the unit from the RV, siphon out four cups of water via the top plug. Be careful to not to remove any resin. Any resin inveterately siphoned out can quickly be returned to unit by allowing resin to settle in the cup, discard excess water from the cup, leaving enough water to return the resin back in unit. Optionally, the unit can be removed from the RV and the unit can be tilted so four cups of water can be poured out via the OUTLET valve.
Add two cups of table salt into a milk jug. Agitate for 5 or more minutes, or as necessary, to dissolve the salt. Pour the mixture into the top plug and replace cap. Assure both DRAIN AND OUTLET valves are closed and open INLET valve and let sit under the inlet water pressure for 5, or more, minutes. While still under pressure, open DRAIN valve and let drain 20 minutes. Close the DRAIN valve and open the OUTPUT valve.
You are now good to go!
