Question fuel capacity

Hi everyone!

My Monaco Cayman 2002 has a 80 gallons fuel tank. When the low fuel light appears, I can put only 50 gallons of fuel.

Why???

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like the warning light is set too high. What does your gauge say?

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

You may need to clean the connections on the tank fuel sensor and adjust it to show full when you know the tank is full.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Does not seem like a big problem. Knowing that it comes on early will give you a longer range to get to fuel.

If you do not want to fuel note the mileage you are at when the light comes on, multiply that number by your fuel mileage and plan to get to a fuel source before you reach the number.

Our light comes on just below a 1/4 tank. I know I have about 200 miles to get to fuel. I look for fuel within that range.

On routes we travel on a regular basis we know the fuel stops we will use. We generally try to fuel each evening near the end of travel. Some comfort knowing we have extra fuel on board in case the next days travel is unpredictable.

If the light goes on with about 30 gal left in the tank, you should have used 50 of the 80. That gives you about 10 gal to get to 20. It's not recommended to run tank too low so filling up at above 1/4 tank is a good thing.

Have you measured the tank with a tape? My tank is advertised at 90 gallons, but can only carry something less because of the location of the filler neck, and the troglodytes who build these things. 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches.
Length x width x height/231 = gallons.

Oh, and then, there is fuel at the bottom that the pickup line can't reach, usually refered to as unusable fuel. Subtract a gallon or three for that. This is an inexact science at best. Plus fuel is burnt by mass, not volume. Hot fuel is less dense, and contains less energy, but a gallon of hot fuel is equal to a gallon of cold fuel. Inexact at best.

The easiest way is to fill often to avoid running out or below your comfort level. Most of my travel is in the west. I have traveled extensively with a group of motorcyclists some who have very small tanks and limited distance. To date I have found ample locations for fuel.

Maybe 34 gallons unusable by the genset? Usually the genset's pickup tube ends above the one for the engine to avoid getting stranded.

Our fuel usage display is usually very, very close to what it takes to fillup... and since the genny shuts off at 1/4 we rarely see the low fuel light because I NEED the AC's running
