Furnace Odor?

OK, I have only had my 99 La Palma for about a week and a half and really don't know anything about the systems and how they work.
My wife have used the coach for a couple of short overnighters and have had no issues to speak of. During these overnighters, we have used the furnace and have had no issues.
A couple of nights ago the weather was predicted to be particulary cold and since my coach is not winterized, I set the heater on on very low(45) just to be on the safe side.
The next day when I went in the coach, there was a distinct odor. Kinda sweet like propane exhaust. I was very concerned but had a busy day and couldn't address the problem even though it had me quite concerned.
Next day when I went out to the coach, I noticed the screen on the heater exhaust was completely blocked by sooty debris. When I turned the heater on the exhaust seemed to not be escaping freely. I suspect it was forcing the exhaust back into the coach and that was the odor in the coach. My CO detector never triggered
I cleared the sooty debris, made sure the draft cap was tight against the screen and have run the heater for an extended period today. No odor and the vent seems to be fine now.

Has anyone experienced this type problem, should I be cooncerned and check further since clearing the screen seemed to correct the problem?
I just don
t want to go to sleeep somewhere and not wake up because I didn't check/correct something simple. Thanks
OBTW, The furnace is an Atwood 8500-IV

It sounds like it isn't getting any make up air to burn clean. Check the air intake and make sure nothing built a nest somewhere.

if it was me i would get that furnace checked out lp should never soot up the exhaust if its burning correctly. what i am saying is i think there is some outher cause for the soot out her than the cloged screen.i would recomend finding someone who has equpment to test the co level in the heator exhaust. that will tell you if it is burning ok or not. your co detector checks the air inside your rv so unless the heatexchanger had a leak the co would stay outside just my 2cents worth lee

Better make sure your co2, propane, and smoke detectors are in working order.

Time for a professional check-up on your furnace I think.

Don't get it "nearly right" doing it yourself. It's just too dangerous.

Whenever I detect a sweet smell, I look for a deceased mouse. (in a mouse trap) It doesn't happen much, but it also tells me that the peanut butter and traps are working.
