trying to replace the gas strut for our entrance door. the one I am taking out is a masterlift - #7674qt. having a hard time finding it or a crossover. anyone know the pound/ force I should be replacing it with? maxum hardware shows what I think is the same strut- ml14, but they show the force being anywhere from 10 lbs. to 80 lbs.

I replaced mine with a 10 pounder.

I used a 15 lb strut. I think anything less would not have handled our door.

My coach doesn't have one...should it? and where would it be mounted?

Timaz,

You don't need one but I got sick of adjusting or replacing the scissor. Once when I opened the door with a tail wind, the door swung so hard it broke the rivet holding the scissor together. When I installed this gas strut, I purposely didn't use the gutter to hold one end. Everything is attached to the frame of the coach/door.

This is the one i put on. Our door is pretty heavy and we're pretty happy with the 10#. The 15# that Joe has should work just fine too, but it will take more effort to close the door.

There used to be a thread that showed detailed installation directions with pictures. Anyone know where it isn't? Those of us looking to do this would appreciate it!

I'm happy with Suspa struts USA made. I put on my pano doors. They have very good dampening. Some people complained about struts poor dampening at end of stroke.I looked for door strut thread it doesn't work on my phone as well as PC for some reason.

I use a 15 Lb. Keep a spare because they don't last forever.

Thanks Joe for posting that. You were the one that inspired me to get rid of the scissor hinge. I sure like this system better.

It suggests a 15lb strut which is what I used. It works well. Holds the door open in most winds and is easy to open and close.

I would suggest leaving the old scissors arm on in addition to the gas strut as an opening limiter. I tried gas struts with out the scissors arm and could not find one that had a " dampened or soft" opening.
I had to hold the door as it opened to keep from damaging the brackets holding the strut. Got tired of messing with it and went back to a new scissors. I like it way better than the strut. If the scissors is loose they are miserable and need repair it is true. I know at some point I will need to repair it but there is info how to do that also.
