My genset shut down (while parked) due to low fuel in the main tank. Went to fuel up and was only able to take on 110 gallons. I know this feature is there to save me from myself but I think automatic shutdown with 90 gals (approx) on board is leaving a bit too much on the table. I have seen mention of people putting in a longer pickup tube but have been unable to get specifics.

Can someone point me to a thread that detailes the procedure or get me started with some part numbers etc?

BTW I have the Onan 7.5 QD.

Thanks! David

You state that you were able to "take on" 110 gallons of fuel, leaving about 90 gallons remaining in the tank when the genset shut down. That computes to a 200 gallon fuel tank, is that correct?

If so, I agree with you.

My tank only holds about 130 gallons and the Aqua-Hot shuts down with about 40 gallons left in the tank. I am assuming that the genset pickup would be in about the same area but haven't tested it as yet.

I have 100 gallon tank --at 30 gallons the gauge hits a quarter and I'm toast but if I shut down motor -- I could still run generator for a bit...I have 100 gallon fuel tank so it's about right

There have been some posts on this forum about generator dip tubes that either were improperly installed or had slipped down or off, making the generator shut down with way too much fuel in the tank. Unfortunately that is all I remember, perhaps others will be able to help more.

When the factory installed mine they cut it short and my Gen quit at about a 1/3 of a tank. I ordered a new pickup tube from Monaco, which comes full length, and you cut it to the depth you want. That way you can run the fuel as low as you are comfortable with. An easy install too, screws in to the top of the tank. Just have to make sure you get the one for the gen as the engine fuel pickup is close to the gen one. Monaco shipped me the engine pickup incorrectly and had to send me another one.

We were boondocking for some time and it happened to us, It shut down with 1/3 tank of fuel in the tank. I was up set;; Well one fellow in the group had extended his tube . And you know what happened , well we drove out; He did also . only his trip was to a fuel station to pick up 10 gallons of diesel for his coach so he could get it out;; There is a reason for the short tube. Changing it can have bad results;; Just ask JOE::

How about some more details?.... How do you get to the "top of the tank" in order to pull out the old tube and insert the new?
