As long as we have owned this coach we have had problems with our ice cream getting very soft. It did not seem to matter what the temp was set to even 9. After following this thread
Norcold.......How Cold?
I decided to replace the thermistor. The ice cream has been in the frig four days now and has stayed hard. This makes me very happy.

I found on ours if we keep the ice cream in the side opposite of the ice maker it will keep it firm to hard.
nothing worse than soft soft serve

Hi Bob,
I am happy that it is back to normal. How long were you having problems? And what setting is the refer at now?
I had my refer set at 9 for over 3 years and really didn't believe that a perfectly good Thermistor was the problem, BOY was I wrong. I sure wish I had done more homework, research and talk to the Norcold people, the ones that really knew what was going on versus the first person that answers the phone and wants to try and help you.
Hard ice cream is great, Eh!

Lets give a big IRV2 hug to RV Dude for his correct diagnosis of many of our common problems.

Richard,
Currently we have the temp set at 6. I placed the thermistor in the middle of the fin and have not moved it yet. We have owned the motorhome for 26 months now and that is how long we have had the problem. The coach was like brand new but the front television had a bad turner, there was a handling issue and I suspect the frig problem. I bet those combined problems are why the previous owner traded.

Bob....We also had issues with the ice cream....I would put it in hard and then it would be soft for 2-3 days and then get hard again and stay hard.....my sister's coach did the same thing.
My refer has been working okay lately, but occasionally will get warm for no reason. I bought the new thermistor and put it in with my spare parts in the coach. I think I'm going to just replace mine now. If it changes how the refer works, I'll order another spare.

I've seen those commercials on TV, when that happens your supposed to consult your Doctor!
Seriously, Don, I put the fans in and that helped quite a bit, but replacing the thermistor did the final trick on mine!

Diplomat Don--Any chance the frig. is going thru a defrost cycle? This happens every 49 hours, with the freezer going to 10 and frig. to about 39. Once over it takes a couple of hours to go back down.

I thought it might be that, but last summer we had it crap out for a whole week where it had a hard time holding 40 degrees. Next trip, it stayed at 32 - 34 degrees.

Diplomat Don,
Your situation and symptoms sure sounds like a bad thermistor. For the $18 on eBay including shipping, it's well worth the try and less aggravation. As Jim Stewart had stated earlier with his problem and myself wrestling with fluctuating temperatures for over 3 years. Finally I was convinced that the cooling unit was partially clogged, purchased one, didn't install it right away, came across this link, Norcold.......How Cold? and finally listened to what RV Dude had to say, Voila!......easy fix. Now I have a cooling unit to sell. Actually, the vendor will take it back once I ship it to him but I am trying to sell it locally as these units have a high failure rate where they end up leaking causing a serious hazard that could burn your coach down. Norcold has a recall going for a retro-fit safety device to prevent that from happening.
Good Luck!
