Going to Washington DC, any suggestions?
Hi Folks! The wife and I are going to be camping near Washington DC for 17 days and would like any suggestions of where to go... what to see or what to avoid. Also what to do about daily transportation, should we use our toad? Or is there a better form of transportation available to us in the DC area?
Also is there any form of "Discount Books" or "Coupons" we should pick up to save a few bucks here and there, and where can we pick up these discount books or coupons?
THANK YOU, very much for any suggestions!!

Stay at Cherry Hill.

They have buses to take you into the city each day.

We stayed at Cherry Hill last year. We liked it a lot. Took the bus to the metro into DC.

Lived their for awhile being stationed at Andrews AFB. Cherry hill great recommendation. Bus or metro only way to get around. Don't waste your time trying to drive around. Parking extremely limited.

We stayed at cherry Hill also a few years ago. They have an information session about 2 everyday on ways to see the city. Go to this. The lady was very informative and told us the best ways to get around. Cherry Hill is not the cheapest but we'll worth the cost when you figure the location and ease of getting into the city. Have fun and safe travels.

I come in I70 to 270, and usually stay at Little Bennett near Gaithersburg. Ten miles to the Shady Grove Metro.
As to what to see - wow, I grew up there and still haven't seen everything. If you are there during the Folklife Festival, make sure to include that in your itinerary.
Smithsonian Folklife Festival
The museums on the mall and the zoo are free.

X4 for Cherry Hill Park and the metro. Take the bus from the park or drive your car to the local metro station, about 3 miles away. Prepare for a super vacation.

X5 for Cherry Hill, Great access to DC via the metro system. You can buy bus and metro passes at the office an go anywhere in the city.
If you go to the Air & Space Annex out at Dulles.... Drive .... its nearly two hours via the metro system

Another fan of Cherry Hill! Though I work from home I actually work for a DC based company and travel there from time to time. The Metro into town is great. But we do always take a toad with us, we love going to Tysons (shopping), Mount Vernon, National Harbor....so much to see and do!

Metro and buses are the only way to go. Contract your local House and Senate members and they will provide you tickets for tours of the White House and Congress. You just have to plan ahead and have dates.
I grew up there, and like others have said, haven't seen it all, either. I would use a good guide book to plan each day's trip. You will walk your butt off, but really will enjoy your visit.
It gets HOT and makes outside activities in the summer tough. Much of the activities includes visiting all the memorials...they are worth seeing. A day tour bus is an easy way to see a lot of them quickly. Many of the metro stops let you off at places like the Smithsonian, the Arlington Cemetery, etc, etc. Old Town Alexandria is worth a stop, as is Georgetown in DC. Lots and lots of great restaurants....any flavor you can imagine. Diners and Dives has been to several. Old Ebbitt grill is priced right and close to the White House....worth a stop....could see lots of congressional people eating lunch or dinner.
Climb the Washington Monument, fly a kit on the lawn....you need to research!
