Hard bangs over highway cracks
We're enjoying our vacation but have really noticed the difference in ride when driving over cracks in the highway, especially frost cracks back in Canada. They bang quite hard to the point it feels like we're going to rattle off the cabinet doors. On bad roads it feels like we're back in our crappy old Class C again.
Tires are newish Samson GL283A with under 10k on them. Roadmaster chassis.
I've checked tire inflation, all air bags are good and I've replaced the front axle shocks with new Bilstein 4600 Heavy Duty to compare. Despite that the front and rear axles seem to bang exactly the same and I'm certain the rears are considerably older and more worn. I believe I got the 'regular' front Bilsteins not the 'comfort valving' so Im wondering how much difference that would make? Is there anything else to adjust or is this just the nature of the beast?

We have an 02' Windsor 40' and had that same hammering when going over those cracks. About 5 years ago went with Bilstein Comfort shocks and now I can hardly feel them. Porpoising also went away.

Our 2005 Beaver will also bang and rattle when running over freeway expansion joints.

I switched to Koni and the bangs are very much reduced. Before that I felt your pain

u say u checked air pressure in tires? but did u set them to the proper psi for YOUR load?
what is on the tire sidewall?
unless FULLY at gvwr that's too high.
and that's my guess, the psi is way too high !
have u weighed your coach?

I don't intend to start a tire debate but before going to Tucson last winter from Missouri I switched the front tires from Sampson to Michilen and the difference was night and day.

They are 120 max psi rated, and I'm running the front at 110 and rear at 100 which is 10 above the spec sticker inside the coach. We're running light with nothing much much in the bays. Can check weight at a truck stop later but then what psi is good?

Xs 3! When I first got my coach I noticed the same as you described. I kept my tires at the max shown on the sidewall. After getting coach weighed I brought the PSI down to what the weight dictates and noticed that the coach rides 100% better. Not near as much rattling over the expansion type joints in the road. Rides nice and smooth now. Easy check.

Check for worn front track bar bushings, which will cause banging when going over bumps.

You are probably carrying too much pressure. The pressure on the sticker is representing the maximum weight the coach can legally carry. Since you are 10 over AND "running light" I wouldn't run anything over that sticker pressure until you get weighed. On my coach, the sticker pressure is 90 psi both front and rear. After weighing with a full fuel tank and 1/2 gray tank, and full compartments I calculated I could actually drop the pressures down to the mid 80's. That weight appropriate pressure makes all the difference in the world in steering control and bump thumping.
Just don't drop the pressures below the sticker until you weigh and calculate.

When you say tires are "newish" are they less than 3 years old ? Look for cross checking on the sidewalls. The Chinese tires are notorious for early sidewall failure and tread separation.

North or South, what tires do you have ?
exactly ?
sounds like you don't have the original tires?
if so, all the more reason the placard is the wrong psi!
do a google search for the mfg's load inflation tables...
then from the weights for each axle, you can set the psi to the amount needed to carry the load you have !
If you are 10 psi over, I would bet you could go down 30 psi, but for now (as Bigd9 said) just drop it to the placard until you get it weighed...
you will kick yourself once you get it adjusted
(or maybe the passengers bouncing WITH you will !!!)

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
I replaced the shocks with Bilsteins and that helped, but we definitely feel the potholes and concrete divider lines, just not nearly as bad! Keep her between the ditches!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
