Hard to start when warm
Morning all,
My 98 HR Endeavor starts really easy first thing in the morning but after 50 miles or so it takes about 10-15 seconds of cranking to get it to fire up.
5.9 ISB Cummins 275 HP
Generator starts and runs fine so don't think it is fuel.
Any thoughts? I was thinking fuel filters.
As another note I pulled off on the side of the road on a little bit of a side tilt towards passenger side and got a "low water alarm" - haven seen it since.
Lift pump was replaced in October but had a fuel leak issue over Memorial Day on low pressure side that I fear damaged vp44 or lift pump but not sure that make sense with the hard start issue when warm. Had thermostat hoses and belts replaced at same time lift pump was replaced.
Seems steering is a little harder to turn as well but could be my imagination.
All help appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

When you turn on the ignition switch are you waiting for the "wait to start" light to go out? Try cycling the key a couple times, giving it time for the light to go out.

Yep - definitely waiting for that. I know the lift pump runs for 30 seconds at initial key on so I waited for that and then cycled again and waited 30 seconds. Did not seem to help.
Thanks

Not sure if this is applicable to the 5.9 but on my 8.3. The fuel shutoff solenoid would not open sometimes when I tried to restart while hot. I replaced it once then the problem came back. Each time I could go to the engine bay and "help" the solenoid open while cranking and it would hold no problem. I later chased and cleaned all of the terminals that were related and haven't had a problem since. Hope that helps.

Thank you. It isn't that it won't start, but it cranks for about 15-20 seconds before it starts and only after driving a few miles. My oil pressure seems low - the pic shows oil pressure at about 2200rpm, but when idle it is showing right below the "N" in normal.
Temp gauge never even flickers.
I am going to have oil changed again (checked this morning and oil looks clean and in the full range on dip stick.
Wonder if I should have this moved to cummins sub forum?
Thanks
Jim

What is your oil consumption like? Hard starting when hot is usually a sign of low compression.. you also mention low oil pressure. These are indicators of a worn out engine. Hope not in your case but just being the devils advocate.

RV-WRITER,
I think your problem is what we have just solved on our 1999 Discovery. We have a Cummins ISB 275, 24 valve.
Recently, when we stopped after running for a good amount of time, the engine would not restart. Tried to get it to restart but no luck until it cooled down. Not nice.
Seems we had just replaced the fuel boost pump with a Raptor 100.
Lots of psi. 20+
Talked to the Raptor people and found out that too much boost is not good for hot restarts.
Cut the boost down to 14 PSI and have not had the problem since.
The VP 44 needs at least 5 PSI to prevent damage to the high pressure pump.
If you start ok, and can accelerate after on the road, I would think you do not have a problem with the VP 44.
If you do not have a fuel pressure gauge, I suggest that you get one installed. Not hard to do if you are handy.
Hope this helps,
JimB

Thanks Jimb
I will have to get one and put it in. I had the lift pump replaced already. Hope that isn't the issue but really hope it's not the vp44 too

Thanks Dennis - oil is at the full line and still brown (not even black yet) since the oil change last October. I really hope it's not a worn out engine (obvious right)

Also - power while driving is great? No issues with pulling hills or anything.

Maybe a manual gauge to check the oil pressure at the engine would help eliminate the possibility of a gauge or sender malfunction. But I don't think oil pressure has anything to do with the starting problem on this engine.

Thanks - good idea. I think I will start chasing down the starting issue by replacing fuel filters and oil pressure by having rig serviced.

What oil are you using? What is your oil preshure?

Unfortunately I don't know what oil was used when I bought it. One of the reasons I want to have it serviced. I have a gauge that says normal low or high. It is always at the n in normal at idle and midrange at higher rpm's.
