High temp On climbs 2001 Dynasty 350HP ISC

Ever since I got this unit (about three years) it gets hot on any hill climbs. I can down shift and run around 80% load and keep it below 205f but if I run at 100% load it will get hot enough for the high temp light to come on.
It's a heavy coach with a smaller engine but I wouldn't think this is normal??
Any ideas on what to try? I'm going to try to find some radiator fin cleaner and start there.
The radiator was replaced once before I purchased the coach.

I have replaced the coolant with final charge and the sca is correct. I do not know if the radiator cap was replaced or not. According to the manual it must be dirty fins.
I just wondered if any dynasty 350 ISC drivers have a similar problem. I wouldn't think it's normal but maybe it is?

If you are climbing step grades then you should be downshifting to keep your motor between 1800 and 2000 rpm. Your peak hp is at 2000 rpm and you are governed to a 2200 limit. Are you a rear radiator or a side radiator in 2001? I can't remember. If you bare a rear radiator then you should spray your radiator with Gunk Engine Degreaser and hose it down from both sides of the radiator. If you are a side mounted radiator then you need to check that your cooling fan is operating at high speed when the motor is getting up in temperature.

Thanks Mike
I do not downshift to maintain 1800-2000. I keep it around 1500. I'll do as you suggest when we leave Wednesday. Side radiator. Seems the fan is running fine, at least at idle.

If I go up a long continues grade of 6% or higher and don't downshift to keep the motor rpm close to peak hp then my temps will go up to 205-210. It is horsepower that climbs hills and not torque. Torque helps you accelerate from a standstill. Try it next time and I bet you are ok.

Does your fan go to high on the climbs? If not it could be the problem as well as keeping the RPM up as well. Side radiators usually stay fairly clean unless you have run on dirty roads that are wet, like mountain passes in winter or in the Midwest where a lot of sand is used combined with the spring melt.

Hey Jeff. Here is what I do. 2000RPM no more than 20psi boost. Downshift to what ever gear allows that. I have used that technique crossing the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. It is over 11k feet. 9% grade west bound at the tunnel. I saw 195F on the VMSPC. If you wiggle your toe it will go to 197. I was about 28mph with my 6k towed. If you still get warm try 19psi boost and so on. 2k RPM keeps the coolant moving and the radiator fan speed up.

It wouldn't hurt to pull your louvers off the radiator and check for debris. I found my oil cooler had accumulated dirt. The rubber shroud seals also crack and break with age. I have my original radiator and CAC.

Thanks. I will definitely try that. Engine seems doggy but it is a heavy coach pulling a jeep gc. I've pulled the louvers and cleaned the radiator. The CAC is only two years old. I also redid the rubber shroud around the radiator. I used to run about 182f at cruise on flat Florida roads. Seem to be running 190 this year but it's been hot. Intake was 115 yesterday. It seems clear my downshifting to maintain 1500 has not been enough. That's a fix that I can do!!
Yesterday I came up 17 to Hiawassee GA and got hot but was only running about 1500 Rpms.

FWIW if I turn off the dash air Engine temps drop 5F. I saw intake temps 111F coming through Alabama week before last, engine temps were 197 pulling hills but I was in econ and down to 1500rpm like you. Your tag is a bit heavier but with my towed and bike we are similar weights, I'm sure. Sure wish I had an ISM…but, if pigs had wings…..

Let's not get too upset about running 197 to 205* F because that is not hot maybe a little warm but nothing dangerous. Above 210 I would start to worry.

I had the antifreeze changed couple years ago but I don't know if they changed the thermostat and radiator cap. Don't know if a new cap would make a difference?
I'm defiantly going to run higher Rpms Wednesday.

Hard not to worry with a high temp light starting to whine at you Mike

>>>Jasinsky
What is the oem temperature on the thermostat? What temperature did you go from and to?

My over temp warning comes on at 210 and it is just to alert you that you had better do something to bring it down. At some point that I haven't figured out yet I would get a STOP engine light.

My high coolant temp light starts to chatter at 202F. It's not on steady, but starts to make noise, which is why I operate at 200 or below. The performance gain vs dissonance from an alarm is not worth it. I'm guessing the alarm is off of the very inaccurate gauge.

I think mine chatters around 202 also. I've never hit 210. My manual list 212 max. I seem to lose some power around 205 but I don't know for sure.
What temp thermostat is oem for the ISC 8.3 350hp?
