I serviced my coach from end to end today, including the wheel bearings......oh my aching back. For the first time I need to add some hydraulic fluid to the power steering reservoir at the rear of the coach. I've looked through all of my manuals and it calls for Dexron III ATF. I made be old and slow, but I know for sure that it's not ATF in that reservoir. Does anyone know what oil and weight that reservoir uses?

Don I have been told Monaco used 15/40 motor oil in some of them, just like in your engine. I know that does not sound right, but came from a tech. You might want to call Monaco tech support and ask. Also there is a high quality oil used in some of them that is AW-46 which is sort of honey color.

Hi Don

Check out this link.

Conclusion: It looks like motor oil. It feels like motor oil. Our 07 Diplomat is definitely filled with motor oil.

Don if it is AW-46 you should be able to get that at NAPA. If you are in a hurry, don't wait for an answer to your email to Monaco tech support. Have heard they are not answering emails, only phone calls.

My old 97 Exeuctive was filled with 15w40. They were nice enough to put a sticker on it for me though.

Thanks....I'll check Napa for the AW-46, if no luck I'll add the 15-40.

My understanding is that Monaco originally used ATF, which is red. Some complaints of steering system seizing up when hot, so Monaco decided that the ATF was a little too thin, so they replaced it with an AW46 oil, which is usually a honey color. That solved the system seizing up when hot, but now there were some new complaints, ripping out hydraulic pump seals in cold weather. So Monaco decided to use a multi-viscosity oil, the 15W40 that they already had in stock to put in their engines. It's also a kind of brown honey color.

What to use? What to use? If the oil is red, then I would assume that it's ATF. If the oil is brown honey, then I would guess use AW46 for mild to warm climate, and 15W40 for varied temperature use.

But it really is a guessing game. Even Monaco couldn't figure out exactly what to use over the years.

Don,

My 07 Diplomat uses 15-40 motor oil. Same as engine.
