Ice Maker - Easy Fix

While preparing our coach for a trip to THE RALLY in Albuquerque this week, the ice maker wouldn't make ice.

The problem was the valve portion of the ice maker water solenoid was sticking in the closed position not allowing water to flow even when the solenoid was energized. After removing the valve from the refrigerator, I found the electrical portion of the valve was good, but the valve wouldn't open. The valve plunger was stuck to the valve seat. I inserted a thin wire into the valve body from the outlet side and was able to push the plunger up. This "unstuck" the plunger and the valve now actuated properly. I re-installed the valve and this morning had a bin half filled with ice.

I also discovered a "gotcha". When the freezer door is open, the 120v AC electrical supply to the ice maker is off. It's interfaced to the door light switch. When the light is on, AC to the ice maker is off. To troubleshoot the electrical system to the ice maker, it's necessary to turn the freezer light off by pressing the door switch.

Our refrigerator is a side-by-side two door Dometic.
