Improve Duo-Therm 5 Button Visability

Anyone ever done anything that substantially improves the visability of this device?
It is back lit but you still have to turn on the ceiling lights to read it. I have remounted mine angled down somewhat but it is still difficult to read.
Are the newer 5 button thermostats any better? Mine is 10 years old.

I took a tip from some forum years ago to make the backlight brighter.

Take the cover off, and you will find that there is a little blue "condom" covering the light. Pull that cover off, and the display will be much brighter.

Dave,

I just took my 5 Button CCC apart and there is no bulb with a Blue condom.

The display is a huge integrated circuit board attached to the main circuit board that looks like a LCD display.

Bummer because I really wanted a brighter screen.

Obviously your 5 Button CCC is much different than mine.

I replaced the 4 botton with the 5 button about three years ago. The display on mine is bright enough to read easy. Probably makes a difference where it's mounted, mine is at eye level.

Corrected description

OK, I just took my thermostat apart to refresh my memory, then looked in the Monacoers forum for the postings about this, which were back in 2007.

When you take the thermostat off the wall, you will see two black plastic screw-in pieces. Turn those to remove the bulbs and then the blue condoms will be exposed.

Here's the picture I posted back in -07:

Thanks Dave.

That explains it! I was not about to fool around with anything back there unless someone has done it already.

I saw those black things but did not know exactly what they were so I didn't touch them.

OK, Joe. You shamed me into removing the CCC once again and you're right.

WOW That is HUUUUUGE!

Thanks Dave for the tip and Joe for the PUSH!

Now maybe I won't need my glasses to set the damn thing.

I can hardly wait to get my coach out of storage and try this fix. It has been a real pain trying to see the display on my control as well.
