Inaugural Journey in remodeled RV
After spending every spare weekend moment and a few weeknights over the past 9 months remodeling my refrigerator fire damaged 2004 Safari Zanzibar, we took it on the "first" trip.
We decided to stay close to home. I had taken apart almost every screw, nut and bold on the interior, every system, cabinets, sofa, water system, A/C system, .. you name it, you never know what might or not work.
We took a 2 night trip to a local state park (FDR State Park) and stayed close to home in the event of disaster. Rented a tow dolly and took along a car - just in case.
Loaded up 3 grandkids and dog and headed out for about 150 miles each way.
I could bore you with details, however;.. it was a great trip with only minor issues encountered. Have a drawer that wont stay shut, overhead TV that moves out when going over rough roads, need to reinforce the bed to the bedroom slide, - nothing major. The biggest issue I found was the base to the front toilet needs replacement, .. I cracked it when I removed the toilet and put it back in but didn't think it would leak -- guess I was wrong. It leaks when someone sits on it. No biggie,.. $30 to replace the flange and gasket and I'll be done with that.
Oh, I did discover that my fuel gauge is pretty accurate and that the generator does cut off when at 1/4 tank!
So now we are ready to begin the RV lifestyle. Already have the next two trips planned out.
Hugh

Wishing you many happy miles after all this work. Hope it all turned out great! I'm looking at buying a 98 Sahara. Safari made some nice RV's 😜 which fridge did you put in?

Uncle Billy,
I put in the GE 17CuFt. model ... GTK17GCEDRBS. After a lot of research it was the best fit for my space. I'm impressed with the few Safari's I have seen. While mine was manufactured by Monaco, they still carried a lot of the Safari quality throughout the coach. There is an older Safari parked in a drive that I pass on my way to work.. it looks nice on the outside - has been parked for at least 4 years, what a shame.

I first looked at the Safari Trek but don't like the GM Hummer diesel in them. Found the Sahara model, man they are nice. Found a 98 in Oregon, with only 26k mi, looks really clean, but owner wants $49k 😖 Little rich for me. Now I found same model, 3506 in Vegas. Just as clean and it has a diesel generator. Dealing with salesman may be able to pick it up. They are asking $41k I'm gonna try to get it for around $34k. If not there are 15,000 other ones out there 😜 But I do really like this model...

Rick.. I'm actually closer to Cumming than Ball Ground. Keep my rig at the storage lot (Mountain View) Bethelview and GA 20! It was a lot of sweat equity, but this was the only way for me to get something close to what I wanted for what I wanted to pay. So, I now have a 2004 coach with updated interior to near what a 2014 would be.

Billy the Sahara model in the photo looks a lot like the one I have watch sit for years. Everything I have heard about them is good. Are you familiar with the Safari user group on Yahoo? They seem to focus on the pre Monaco years.

I am and I do need too join. Got a reply from the dealer today saying it would not be possible to have the rig taken to CAT dealer and checked out. Plus they took a deposit on Saturday. So either they are tired of my questions of found some moron too pay without having the engine checked.... Oh well, I'll keep looking 😜

Hugh - mine is parked at Sawnee Storage, just east of Post Road. We will have to meet up for coffee sometime.

Rick,
I go past that storage to where mine is parked. I think they wanted a few bucks more per month. I'm paying $55 and like the owner of the lot. I live by Poole's Mill Covered Bridge - app. 6 miles from the storage lot for my RV. Let me know when is a good time for you and we can grab a coffee. Always good to exchange RV talk.
