I'm about to change my fuel filters on my 2007 HR Neptune for the second time. The first time went ok but there must be a better way. Navigating the new filter up between various dirt covered hoses, etc, without contaminating it is difficult at best. I cleaned the area as much as possible but it is impossible to remove all the caked on grime. Has anyone come up with some technique more reliable than just attempting to be very careful?

I power washed that area the day before the filter change, it helped.

I had one similar to that and I use to put a shop towel with a wire attached to cover the filter until I had it in place and then use my other hand to pull the towel off and then screw the filter in place. Lot of extra prep, but it provided a clean filter!
