Installation of digital thermostat

Has anyone installed a digital thermostat, i.e. as the ones seen in truck cabs with blue readout (usually reading -50 F +/- degrees) on Ice Road Truckers? If so where did you find the best place for sensor to be located to pick up outside temperatures? I'm also assuming I've got to drill a rather large hole in dash?

I've installed small gauges, etc but not one like this and don't want to foul things up. Many thanks for any help.

I have one by the driver's seat (not as exotic as Ice Road Truckers), mounted on the left arm rest where all of the switches are located. At the back of the armrest, by the cupholder on mine, there was an open flat area. I mounted an inexpensive digital thermometer with a long sensor lead. I ran the sensor lead under the edge of the cup holder and into the hollow of the armrest. I fished it outside from there and mounted it on the frame rail on the driver's side of the generator behind the front cap (about knee high. It gives me a pretty accurate reading in this location.

I also have a remote thermometer for the coach with inside/outside temps. I mounted the sending untit for that under the edge of the large slide. When driving it's protected. When parked, it's out in the open air, but not in direct sunlight.
