The transmission temperature guage on the dash board is intermittent. It functions fine when it works but it works somedays and not others. Is the fault in the guage? wiring? Anyone ever had a similiar problem?

Check for bad ground wires.

Yep, on a 99 dip I had that problem on about all the gauges, it was faulty ground wires the screw was not tight enough on the ground bar on most of the wires and the gauges were not cot very accurate after I got the ground problem (eng temp 15 deg hi, trans 25 deg low, odomotor 8% low, ect), solved by going to a silverleaf VMSpc then I could read all the info direct from the engine and trans computers.

Try this. Engine running - observe instruments.
Turn on headlights, bright and at the same time observe instruments again. If some or all change (some higher, some lower) their readings, it's because there is a reduction in available current. Keep in mind that both the instruments and their illumination bulbs draw current. This current needs a way back to complete the circuit. This is the reason for having grounds.
I found that Monaco didn't provide sufficient grounding for dash components.
Seek a better ground or match the wiring to the ampacity.
