Isb 325 smoking
For the past year my '08 ISB 325 has started smoking on acceleration. Most noticeable from a stop. Barely noticeable in side view mirror when accelerating at speed, but still there.
Cummin's has been chasing it to no avail. Replaced 2 injectors, turbo, ran diagnostics, still smokes some, although certainly not as bad as before injector replacement.
Did not smoke at all for first three years...
Anyone had a similar experience or unique discovery or repairs for this issue?

John, what color is the smoke?
Most Cummins ISB engines tend to emit black smoke during acceleration. This is a programmed slightly rich condition in an attempt to avoid engine damage from excessive EGT. Usually, if you accelerate moderately it will emit less smoke.
If the smoke is blueish, then you have an oil control issue that should be addressed.

These days the newer diesels do not emit much or any black smoke on accelaration. If that was normal then Cummins would not be trying to fix it. You would not program a diesel to run richer to lower the EGTs. A diesel's EGT gets hotter with more fuel added to burn. Gasoline engines have hotter EGTs if they are leaned out which is totally opposite. If there was a diagnostic code active you would have a CKL and that would have been the first thing Cummins would have fixed.
For interest I can see zero black smoke out of my 2004 Detroit motor on the heaviest accelaration and it is easy to see my exhaust out of the passenger side mirror. I have checked it while climbing 7% grades and near steady max RPM with 42 lbs of boost.

Has anyone checked your turbo for leaky oil seals? Also the turbo shaft assembly might have just enough wear to slow down the rotation so you you do not build boost fast enough so causing black smoke . Black smoke is usually caused from lack of air, bluish smoke an oil control issue as someone mentioned before and white smoke is usually an over fueling issue. Hope this helps .Please let us know what the outcome is. It is always good to learn new stuff. And I do hope it is something simple.

Air filter?
What is the condition of the air filter and or the intake system? Insufficient airflow will cause an overly rich condition and there for the black smoke. Normally it will not cause a CEL. And if the previous tech only looked at the filter, further towards the turbo may be compromised/ restricted.
Just food for thought,
Allen

Smoke is black.
They replaced the turbo, no difference. Fault code was 2386.
Air intake system good with clean, new, filter.
Tightened loose fuel high pressure connector(s).
Seems unusual that I had no smoke for first three years and now noticeable.
I will be taking it back in for further diagnostics.
Thanks for all the input.

Anyone tried the "Banks Powerpack" described in March Motorhome magazine article?
Any other thoughts on improving ISB 325 performance?

We have the Banks Power Pack but it's on an ISC 350.
